L-word: Tell me a little bit about your new book “Last To Die” that is coming out on August 28.
TG: It brings back a character from “Ice Cold” named Rat, a teenage boy who saved Maura’s life in the Wyoming Mountains. They’ve gotten very close, this bond between them. Anyway, Rat is now attending a very mysterious boarding school in Maine. People don’t know much about this boarding school but it offered him free tuition. Maura is going to go out to visit him and when she gets there, she discovers that it’s a really weird school. It turns out that it’s a school for children who are all crime victims.
L-word: Also the person who in charge was introduced in “The Mephisto Club.”
TG: Yes, Anthony Sansone. It turns out that the school is not only for crime victims. It is run by crime victims. And the idea is to teach the next generation of crime fighters. The story is also about three orphans who are all survivors of family massacres. Two years later they are living with their foster families and then the foster families are attacked. So they are twice survivors, twice orphaned and they end up in this school. Somebody is still trying to kill them.
L-word: And Maura and Jane are trying to solve the mystery.
TG: Right.
L-word: You mentioned during the Q&A that some of your books concentrate more on Jane, while the others are more about Maura, even though they are both present. How do you decide which character you want to concentrate on?
TG: It depends on the story. For this one I think Maura becomes much more important because it’s really about her and a little boy. Though, Jane has a lot of investigating to do in this story as well. I try to get both of them a good role but just because of the nature of the mystery one or the other is going to take precedents.
