You break it, you replace it – Chapter 9

Alice helped her grief stricken friend into the house and lowered them both gently onto the sofa. She quickly reached for the remote and turned off the TV to block out the images which sealed the fate of flight eighty-five and the 187 souls on board.

Still Tina had not uttered a word but her blank stare began to dissolve into a look of utter anguish. Alice watched closely as Tina opened her mouth to speak but she didn’t seem able to get the words to form, instead a gut-wrenching cry filled the air as she launched into uncontrollable sobs. Tina’s body shook violently with the sudden onslaught of grief.

Alice gathered Tina into herself in an effort to sooth her pain but Tina was rigid in her arms. Leading Tina’s head to her shoulder Alice wrapped her arms around Tina’s back and succumbed to the tears that filled her own eyes wondering how any of them were going to get through this. After several minutes Tina began to yield to the comfort Alice offered as she slid an arm around Alice’s neck pulling her nearer still. Slowly the shaking subsided and Alice felt Tina’s breathing level out to a steady rate.

“I’ve got you Tina” Alice whispered stroking Tina’s hair with a steady rhythm “I’m here, I’m here”

Alice felt Tina slowly take a deep breath.

“It’s all wrong Alice” She whispered sadly

“I know it is” Alice replied, closing her eyes willing herself not to cry, willing herself to be strong.

Tina receded from Alice’s hold and for the first time their eyes met, Alice flinched at the torment she saw.

“I should have been there” Tina was trying to explain but words were deficient for explaining what was going on in her mind…and in her heart. She lowered her eyes to the floor before continuing “I should have been with her. It would have been OK…because she was there, she would have comforted me while it was happening. But I wasn’t there, I wasn’t there for her, she was all alone” Her tears began to fall a new but she was strangely calm now, almost disconnected from her words “I should have been there to hold her, it was never meant to be like this, it should have been the two of us together”

    1. That is a relief she isn’t dead. This story is SO GOOD I am anxiously awaiting your next post. I am hoping Tina and Bette will be able to have the right conversation that will lead to a reconcilation

    2. Amazing! Even though we ‘knew’ you could not kill Bette off, you had us wondering the whole time which is really a work of art on your part. It took all day for Bette to come home, without a call, and her entrance was touching. I sort of wish Alice had stayed to maybe walk Tina out to Bette in order to dull the shock. How is Bette going to greet Tina without scaring the bejesus out of her :) Great story!!!

    3. Okay I have just read your entire story so far. Wonderful Story, hell it’s awesome. My heart is beating like a freight train. Can’t wait to read what you have in store for us next.

    4. I am still trying to get my breathe back. I hope Tina realizes as did bette you only live once and mistakes happen and we need to look at the Big Picture for what they really mean and continue with Life. Please post soon. thanks
