Rosemary took another sip of her drink and smiled

“It had crossed my mind but it was only when she started hanging round with Tina so much. Bette isn’t like other girls of her age. She really has been a loner for so long and suddenly she is with Tina all the time and they are inseparable”
“But there is one thing for them to be friends – did you see them as a couple ?”
“First of all I saw the way Bette looked at Tina and it worried me in case Bette was getting a crush on Tina. It was possible given how little contact she’s had with kids of her own age. I was really worried and I didn’t want Tina to find out in case it hurt Bette and it messed up their friendship. Then I started to watch Tina and see how she was looking at Bette and I realised that Tina really was into Bette. Its not hard from the clues to work out that they were crazy about each other. I am delighted – really I just couldn’t be happier. I am way happier about them dating than I am about the grades thing. The grades thing is nice and its always good to know how smart my little girl is but she’s done it before and I have never taken it for granted but you get used to it. But this – this with them dating – I have cried with happiness over it “

Kate smiled at Emma and looked at Rosemary

“I am glad you are happy about it “

“Yes – of course. Tina was so miserable only a few months ago and now she is really just thriving – they are clearly really good for one another. I am proud that Tina has come out and I happy that she and Bette are such a good fit together “ Kate said

Rosemary looked at Emma “ What about you Emma ?”
Emma sipped her cocktail “The same – I did struggle last night to get my head around it – not that Tina is gay – as I said – its not the biggest shock ever. I was genuinely shocked about Bette but once I had got over the shock of the whole thing and the realisation that they have planned the way they came out. They studied hard – they got the grades and then they came out. Its well thought out and brave. But I have been thinking about it all day – Bette obviously makes Tina happy and Tina makes Bette happy. They are 17 – of course they want to date and explore their sexuality. Its inevitable “
