Lest I Forget (25)
“That’s great!”
“Yeah, it’s decent,” I agreed. “How are you doing? Are things slowing down at all?”
She sighed. “Not really. I still have a lot of papers and theses to grade, but at least the department meetings have slowed up a little bit. Did you have lunch?”
“Yeah, Shane brought me a sandwich awhile ago. I’m fine,” I answered.
“Well, if you ever want anything, call me and let me know. I don’t like leaving work but it’s important that you eat, and I have no problem picking something up for you and bringing it over,” she said. “I want you to take care of yourself.”
Alice made a sound of quiet approval at this, and I scoffed. “I’m fine, you guys. Stop worrying about me so much, it makes me nuts.”
“Sorry. I just don’t want anything to happen to you,” Kallie said quietly. I leaned over a little bit and hugged her.
“Nothing will, sweetie. I’m fine. Everybody’s looking out for me, so please don’t worry about anything.”
She sighed, but nodded. “Okay, but seriously, let me know if you need anything.” I nodded, and she sighed again. “What were you guys doing?”
“Just talking. I was telling her about when you came home for the first time,” I told her.
“Oh. That sounds…pretty boring, actually,” she joked. I rolled my eyes at her.
“It’s not boring at all, it’s a good story!” I exclaimed.
“Well, I might change my mind if I hear it from the beginning. Proceed,” she said, and seemed to be trying not to laugh. I shook my head.
“Fine, but now you can’t tell people that I never did anything for you. I already mentioned how Shane gave you your name…but you already know that.”
“Yeah. It’s okay, just start from wherever you were,” she said with a shrug. I nodded and took Al’s hand again.
**********
The interview process didn’t go nearly as badly as I’d feared. Even the waiting wasn’t too horrible, mostly because we were all so busy getting ready for the baby that neither of us really gave a lot of thought to the interview itself. Or at least, I didn’t, and I was pretty sure that Alice didn’t either. Which was probably the point, looking back on things.

What a great chapter! The juice thing at the beginning was very poignant to me. Love the touch about the guitars — I wish the show hadn’t dropped that aspect of her character. The whole Kallie thing is written perfectly: the interview stress and concerns and how they were each trying to keep themselves together, the bonding time, the knitted blankets, Shane holding the baby, baby proofing (they are way ahead of the game there), the interview going well and celebrating by standing and watching the baby for hours, finally getting the baby home. Kallie sounds like the perfect baby. I think I said it in an earlier comment: Alice and Dana need Kallie as much as she needs them. It is so perfect that they found each other. Thanks so much, MT! Just wonderful…
I cannot comment any better than what MaGoose has already said. I too thought the knitted blankets was very touching. I am glad to see the family being all supportive to Kallie especially Shane and Jenny. I also want to add that I read your comment to danish_always. MT, you are a true Danish yoda. Thank you for sharing your wisdom to your fellow Danish writers!

I don’t know if I’ve commented on this story (or any of your stories for that matter) yet, if I didn’t… I should have :). There all great. *gives a thumbs up*. And thanx for updating this quickly :).
Anything with a baby in it is a wonderful story. I love that that Kallie was a choosen one.
