Lest I Forget (25)
The nurse came in with some juice for Alice after a little bit. “All you really need to do is hold the container and the straw,” she told me. “She has enough to control to hold it herself for a little while, but her muscles aren’t strong enough to hold it as long as she needs to quite yet.”
She said this in a very perfunctory way, and while I know she didn’t mean it to, it embarrassed Alice. She rolled her eyes at me when I stood up to take the little container from the nurse. After she’d checked all of Alice’s fluid levels and deemed everything to be all right she left the room with a promise to be back soon.
“Don’t worry about it, baby. It’s not a big deal,” I tried to reassure Alice. She looked pretty ashamed, and I felt horrible for her. “Look, it’s not your fault, you can’t do anything about it,” I reasoned, but a sad sigh from her drove home the point that it didn’t matter much at all.
“I know,” I told her, leaning down and kissing her cheek. “But we have to get through it, and it’s really not a big deal to me. I still think you’re a rock star anyway.”
Her eyes lit up at the old endearment. It was really a pretty stupid one, at least to me, but she seemed to love it so I’d say it sometimes when she was really feeling down on herself. Usually it didn’t do much, but this time it seemed to cheer her up quite a bit.
“I just don’t want you thinking you’re gonna go home and bust out your guitar. I won’t have that,” I continued, and she grinned at me. She had seven guitars at the house, one of which was the one she’d played in college. It was her most prized possession, and she rarely touched it. But once in awhile, she’d take it from its spot on the wall in her office and play me a song or two. She never did that for anyone else, but she wrote songs for me in her head. I don’t think she ever wrote them down anywhere, but whenever I’d ask, she’d tell me that she’d been working on them for awhile.

What a great chapter! The juice thing at the beginning was very poignant to me. Love the touch about the guitars — I wish the show hadn’t dropped that aspect of her character. The whole Kallie thing is written perfectly: the interview stress and concerns and how they were each trying to keep themselves together, the bonding time, the knitted blankets, Shane holding the baby, baby proofing (they are way ahead of the game there), the interview going well and celebrating by standing and watching the baby for hours, finally getting the baby home. Kallie sounds like the perfect baby. I think I said it in an earlier comment: Alice and Dana need Kallie as much as she needs them. It is so perfect that they found each other. Thanks so much, MT! Just wonderful…
I cannot comment any better than what MaGoose has already said. I too thought the knitted blankets was very touching. I am glad to see the family being all supportive to Kallie especially Shane and Jenny. I also want to add that I read your comment to danish_always. MT, you are a true Danish yoda. Thank you for sharing your wisdom to your fellow Danish writers!
