    Chapter Four: Put The Fun Back In Funeral

     

    Funeral. Even the word sounds depressing. A day dedicated to mourning a lost loved one, a day where you sit in church and cry your eyes out, a day where you say the last good bye’s that you never imagined you’d be uttering so soon, a day to be among friends and family, sharing amusing quips about the one who was lost. At least, that was how they normally went. Of course, nothing ever went normally for Spencer, and today would be no exception.

    Standing in front of the full length mirror, she eyed her reflection, hoping it was just low self esteem that was making her feel so ugly. Although she’d regained some color after her release from the hospital, thanks to her family practically force feeding her, she still looked off. Her eyes shifted to her wrists as she tugged her sleeves down to cover the exposed scar. She wore a black skirt that fit snugly, but didn’t cling to her figure in a way that would be inappropriate for a funeral. One her top half was a black button up blouse, whose long sleeves she periodically adjusted to make sure they concealed her wrists.

    Around her neck was a simple necklace with a deep blue pendent that rested right in the nook of her collar bone. It was Sarah’s favorite. She always proclaimed how beautifully it brought out her eyes, but Spencer couldn’t see it. When she looked in the mirror, the only thing she saw was a very sad looking girl in her mid twenties with scarred wrists and a broken heart. How anyone else saw any different was beyond her. Sighing, the blonde turned away from her reflection as she heard Glen calling her name from downstairs.

    Glen was around a lot lately. In fact, he even mentioned moving in with her for a little while till she could get back up on her feet. It seemed like she was never alone anymore, and it was true. No matter where she was or how she tried to evade them, her family was always around, monitoring her every move. She couldn’t be on the toilet for more than a few minutes before there was an anxious knock at the door. She couldn’t blame them, and she knew it was the doctors orders, but still. Couple that with the mysterious disappearances of all the sharp objects in her home, and it was building up to be a long month.
