CHAPTER 14: BLOCKS AND TECHNICAL FOULS, REBOUNDS AND FREE THROWS

SUNDAY – WEEK 6

“FREE THROWS”

7:50 am @ the McCutcheons’ Residence

“Please… Don’t tell anyone… Don’t tell Carmen. I don’t wanna ruin things for us… You two know that, right…?”

Although the buzzing of her electric clock had drowned out the echoes of her deep voice inside her head, Shane McCutcheon clutched her comforter tightly and covered all of her in a single move. “When will these fucking dreams stop haunting me?!”

Using only a fraction of her strength, Shane reached out to get her phone that was comfortably placed on the end table beside her. She flipped it open and with droopy eyes, found she had two new text messages. “Oh, fuck yes.” Shane had never been this happy to see that she had received new messages so she quickly sat up but the smile on her face was easily erased when she found out it wasn’t from someone she had expected.

The first one was from Papi and it said, “Hey, Vanilla! What say we go for a quick one-on-one at Mark’s around 10? Don’t bother text messaging me back. I’ll be there around 9:30. See ya, sport!” Shane scratched her head but was surprised when she wasn’t suffering from a hangover in a Sunday morning. “I’ve had too less to drink, I guess… What the hell is up with Papi this time?”

The other one was from Dana, “Guys, Lara and I are gonna go over to Tina’s house later after lunch to check if she’s any better. If any of you wanna tag along, we’ll be at the Planet at 1pm.” Shane looked at the clock, and a couple of minutes had passed since she was woken up. “Fuck…”

She had left Carmen a ton of messages last night and Shane still had nothing from her. Worrying wasn’t something that she was used to feeling. Other than that, there was Tina whose knees, out of the blue, gave away in the Planet and as a friend, she had no plans of second guessing her decision to join Dana and Lara later.
