    The Letter ch. 29

    The Letter

    Chapter 29

Momma had told us that we had to meet her lawyer who was named Joyce. I didn’t want to but Momma said that the only way to move forward and get this over with was to meet with her. In order for her to prepare for court, if it came to that, she needed to know us. She needed to know our wants and couldn’t go by just what Momma said. We had sat around talking after we got back from The Planet and before Tina came over about what makes up a family. I had never thought of that before. My family had always been my family and it didn’t matter that Lyss and I didn’t look like any of them or have any of their blood running through our bodies. They were our aunts and James, our uncle. For anyone to be able to say that Momma wasn’t our Momma was just a fool.

I have friends who love coming over, especially when everyone is here. They don’t look at me having a gay mom or gay aunts. I’ve never even heard anything about Momma being a different color from us. No one saw any of that except the Warrens. I wasn’t allowed to use the word hate but in my mind, I kept saying how much I hate them. I do. They want to take us but they don’t know anything about us. They don’t know that Lyss has to have her blanket to sleep. They don’t know that under my pillow I have a shell that we found on the beach when I was six but that is under any pillow that I put my head on. Momma knows though. She knows when we go some place that she has to pack Lyss’ blanket and my shell or we won’t sleep well. She knows that when I’m sick that I just want to be left alone and Lyss wants to cuddle. How could they? They chose to not be a part of our lives and now, why should they be allowed to just come back and say that we aren’t doing well here.

I guess I hate them because even if they were the best place for us….and they’re not, they live across the country. If we have to go live with them, I wouldn’t see Momma every morning when I wake up and each evening before I go to bed. I wouldn’t see Aunt Alice, Aunt Shane, Aunt Dana or Aunt Kit almost every day like I do now. I wouldn’t have anyone to share my dreams with or explore my fears. I couldn’t do that with those people. They aren’t people I know.

    1. So glad the girls are having a good time, soon enough they may have to meet the Warrens and thats a fate worse than the end of summer. Thank you NAG, Md

    2. Love the way you’ve written the developing relationship between Em and Tina. The perspective through Emma’s eyes is so endearing… Joyce isn’t the only one that could fall in love with that kid… or with the entire family, for that matter. The Warren’s will have quite the fight.

    3. So good to see Em liking Tina now and being really good about Tina being in their lives. Glad that Tina can bond with the girls more by spending the time with them doing things they like to do that Bette does not. It will help them trust her more and love her eventually. And the Kennards showing the girls what grandparents should be. This was a lovely chapter. Hopefully Joyce will get info that can help solve the mystery of the warrens and what they are up to. Hopefully when the Judge talks with Em and Lyss he/she will have the same opinion that Joyce has as it relates to the girls and their family and the interaction they have with them. You already know how I feel about those people. I really wish you would let me drop them into the deepest part of the ocean with concrete shoes and in the alternative I would love to dispatach them to the 5th level of Hell. Sorry, just had to vent a little. Post when you can.

    4. BEAUTIFULLY written, thank you. It is GREAT to see these kids wuth such happiness and joy in their lives when they are going through such troubling times. They almost got Bette to sleep out with then, LOL. They need to keep working on her. PPS :o).

    5. That was so beautifully written from Em’s perspective. I hope we get to see Bette’s reaction to the tents when Tina tells her – now that will be cute!! Great story!

    6. Awww NAG, this chappy was so enchanting! We could feel all the emotions and thoughts that Emma was experiencing at this particular time of her life. The views she has about all of her aunts are so endearing. Furthermore, it was a pleasure to visualize the scenes where Tina is beginning to win the girls trust. With all the turmoil that is expected in the horizon, meeting the Kennards was a major thoughtful detail coming from Tina. Indeed it was important for the girls to know that Tina’s parents can be better people and be more like family. It was a good way to put in a balance what really matters. In the end, the girls will gain more confidence to speak loud and express which is their real family. The Warrens will not have a chance if the bond with their Momma B and Tina is solid. Thanks for this magnificent update, NAG. We loved it! PPS Lucero & Marsha (JC’s Salsa Aunties)

    7. AWESOME chapter!!! Tina’s parents ROCK!!!! As Emma says “This is what a family should be like. Mr. and Mrs. Kennard are who grandparents should be. AMEN!!!! PPS!!! thank you.. hope all is going well with the computer!!

    8. The girls may have grandparents after all. The Kennards would love to be their grandparents just as much as Tina would love to be their step mom. This is getting good, and I hope that it turns out happily for the family.

    9. I want to go the the kennards’ house! I am sooo glad that Em has started to let tina in. they share so much in common that tina will only be able to help Em grow… provided those darn warrens get out of the picture asap! pps

    10. Naaaaaaaaaaag…you’re back! I just got caught up on your updates as I have been in Italy on vacation. What a treat to get back to these. I love this story and your writing. Can’t wait until the next installment!
