The Girl Who Changed My Life 36: Only me and you
As Bette and Tina came out of the bedroom everyone cheered. Marina had laid out a buffet on the dining table, and the drinks were already flowing.
“Looks like you’re all sorted, maybe we could just go back into the bedroom…” Bette joked to Alice.
“Guys, this is your party!” Alice grabbed Bette’s arm and led her to the kitchen “here” she handed Bette two glasses of champagne.
Bette smiled and handed a glass to Tina. They headed back out and were smothered by Dana and Shane.
“That was the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen” Dana wrapped her arms round them.
“You guys are just too ***** cute” Shane kissed them both on the cheeks.
“T, will you excuse me a minute?” Bette asked.
“Sure”
Bette walked over to Kit, who was stood in the corner, trying to avoid Melvin and any temptation to drink.
“Hey baby girl” she smiled when she saw Bette approaching.
“Kit, I wanted to thank you. Not just for your beautiful song, but for all your help today”
“Anything to make sure this day is special”
“I really appreciate the effort you’re making” Bette put a hand on Kit’s arm.
“I want to be a part of your life” there were tears in Kit’s eyes.
“You can be” Bette pulled Kit in for a hug.
“Ladies” the voice came from behind them.
The sisters turned to find their father standing behind them.
“Dad” Bette said without any emotion “what are you doing here?”
“My little girl got married, I wouldn’t miss it for the world”
“I married a woman, Dad” Bette pointed out.
“I know. I guess I’m gonna have to get used to it”
“You’ve had a long time to get used to the fact that I’m a *****”
“I’ve always thought I could ignore it. But now I see that in doing that, I’m ignoring a part of you” Melvin bit his lip.
“I’m listening” Bette gave him her full attention.
“This is hard for me to admit, but I’ve been a fool. I thought if I ignored it it’d go away. But I see the love you have for Tina, and I realise it’s not gonna go away” Melvin looked up to face Bette.
“Your acceptance means a lot to me” Bette patted him on the arm “but there’s someone else you need to accept too”
Bette walked away to mingle, leaving Melvin and Kit to talk. At the same time Tina was talking to her parents.
“You made it then?” Tina addressed her mother.
“You really do love her, don’t you?” Carol said, almost bitterly.
“You know I do”
“What your mother is trying to say is that she is coming to terms with your relationship” Robert squeezed Tina’s arm.
“Mum?”
“I realise that I could lose you if I don’t deal with this” Carol admitted.
“Bette is the centre of my world. If you don’t accept her then you don’t accept me”
“Then I will just have to accept her I suppose”
“Yes, I suppose you will” Tina turned and spotted Bette walking towards her, so she met her half way.
“Hey you” Bette smiled.
“Hey” Tina greeted her with a soft kiss.
“How’s it going?”
“Better now I’m with you” Tina took Bette’s hand.
“Everyone!” Alice was shouting, having stood up on a chair.
Bette and Tina groaned as everyone turned to look at Alice.
“As best woman it’s my duty to make a small speech” Alice announced, trying to ignore the heckling from Dana and Shane.
Bette squeezed Tina’s hand – she was a little worried about what Alice might say.
“As many of you know, I used to date Bette. But now she’s my best friend, and I can safely say that I have never seen her as happy as she is with Tina. This morning I saw Bette more nervous than she’s ever been, and that’s because she wanted everything today to be just right. She used to be a bit of a wild one” Alice saw Bette hang her head “but I won’t embarrass with any stories now. I’d just like to congratulate you both, and in particular Tina for actually managing to turn Bette into a one woman woman!” Alice raised her glass “To Bette and Tina!”
Everyone toasted the couple, and then Dana stepped up.
“Erm..hi everyone. I’d just like to say that it’s time for the couples first dance. And we’ve asked Kit Porter to sing for us again”
Everyone cheered as Kit stepped up with a micraphone. A space was cleared, and Bette put her arms round Tina’s waist. As the music started, Tina rested her hands on Bette’s shoulders.
And thanks for the times that you’ve given me
The memories are all in my mind
And now that we’ve come to the end of our rainbow
There’s something I must say out loud
They moved their bodies closer together and rested their heads on each others’ shoulders.
You’re once, twice, three times a lady
And I love you
Yes you’re once, twice, three times a lady
And I love you, I love you
Lifting their heads, Bette and Tina looked into each others’ eyes and mouthed the words “I love you”.
When we are together the moments I cherish
With every beat of my heart
To touch you, to hold you, to feel you, to need you
There’s nothing to keep us apart
They held each other gently and rested their foreheads together. They could feel each other breathing, and wanted to hold this moment forever. Even though they knew people were watching them, it felt like they were the only two people in the world.
You’re once, twice, three times a lady
And I love you, I love you
As the song finished and everyone cheered, Bette and Tina pressed their mouths together and kissed softly. Bette placed her hand on the back of Tina’s neck and slid her tongue into her mouth. Tina moaned softly and ran her hands down Bette’s back.
The party continued without problems, with everyone wanting a turn at dancing with the two brides. As the night drew to a close and the guests left, Bette and Tina approached Alice, Dana and Shane.
“We just wanted to thank you for everything” Bette started.
“You’ve made everything so special for us” Tina finished.
“Aw you guys” Alice pulled the five of them together for a group hug.
“Now, if you don’t mind, my wife and I would like to go to bed” Bette smiled.
The others grinned “No problem” Shane winked.
The three left with promises to help clean up in the morning and their congratulations. When they were finally alone, Bette took Tina’s hand.
“This has been the best day of my life” she whispered.
“The best bit’s still to come” Tina grinned and led Bette to the bedroom.
