The Day My World Stopped Turning
The Day My World Stopped Turning
I remember that evening just like it was yesterday. I don’t
think I could forget it if I tried. The pain I felt at Bette’s betrayal was
just too deep to handle. I did what I had always done I withdrew inside myself
and I ran. I ran as far away from her as I could get. I ran to the only place I
knew she would not follow me I ran to North Carolina back to my home town.
You see when I fell in love with the infamous Bette Porter
and wanted to declare my love for her to everyone I knew my family members were
at the top of that list. I ignorantly thought they would be as happy as I was
to finally found the love of my life. Sad to say they were not.
After a short two hour visit Bette and I were ask in impolite
terms to leave their home and I was told to not come back until I was no longer
with that woman. Well it took me
seven long years to distance myself from that woman and then I don’t think I
would have if she had been faithful.
Once I left LA I lost contact with all the friends I had made
there. I guess I chose to give them up since I knew that they would never be
accepted by my family any more than my relationship with Bette had been. Also
living in such a small conservative town I knew it was not possible for them to
come and visit me and be their true self. That was the main reason I never
invited any of them and in the end just decided to give up on our friendships.
Eventually I met someone I could be happy with and married
him. Yes, I said him. It took me a long time to realize that I could never date
another woman. Firstly, because Bette was the first woman I had been attracted
to and after her the rest just didn’t meet up to the standard she had set so
what was the use. Secondly, two women living openly together in a lesbian
relationship would not have been acceptable here in fact; it could have
possibly been dangerous for both women in this town and leaving again was out
of the question.
