    The Campaign

Bette had just returned from a Saturday morning spent on campus. Such commitments were a rare but necessary part of her administrative responsibilities. Today had been the initial meeting of the search committee for the position Jodi had vacated. She was pleased with how it had gone, and was now able to relax for the rest of the day.

As soon as Bette drove up, she knew Tina was still at kindermusic with Angelica. Her car wasn’t in the driveway, and she had suggested that would be their morning project. Bette actually hadn’t thought she’d be home so early, or she would have suggested they do something for the afternoon. She contemplated calling Tina’s cell to see if she could catch her.

As she pondered the idea, the doorbell rang. Through the curtains that covered the front door window, she saw a man dressed in a suit standing on the porch. She opened the door to greet the stranger, and noticed the identification hanging from a tag around his neck.

    “Yes?” Bette asked.

“Good afternoon,” the man said cheerfully. “I’m Scott Collins, representing the Republican candidate for the House of Representatives.” He handed her a brochure. “I was hoping you could spare some time to speak with me about issues that are important to you in the upcoming election.”

“You do know you’re in West Hollywood, don’t you?” Bette inquired.

“Well, yes, I actually live in West Hollywood,” he replied, seemingly perplexed at her question.

“I would prefer to sit on the front porch rather than invite you into my home, but yes, I would be interested in speaking with you on quite a number of issues,” Bette replied diplomatically.

They each took a seat on the porch. He sat with his pen at the ready, hovering over the paper on his clipboard, as if prepared to act immediately on areas of concern to this particular voter.

“What are the issues that speak to you as a resident of this community?” he asked as he leaned forward to receive her reply.

“Considering a Democrat is currently in power, perhaps you’d like to tell me how your candidate would improve the lives of those in this congressional district,” Bette suggested.

“Well certainly, we feel it’s important to maximize tax relief for all Americans,” he began. “Tax cuts are a high priority for a Republican congress.”

    1. Did I just get tricked into reading a PSA? LOL! No matter, it was a good read. This Scott dude must be living in the less-gay part of WeHo or something. :P

    2. Good story and good shout out to those that don’t vote. I was raised that “if ya don’t vote ya can’t bitch” and lord knows I have a few things to say. Thank you, Md

    3. JKS, well spoken. I too am Canadian and it never hurts to remind everyone that the only way in our society for us to be heard as individuals is to vote. Nicely written!

    4. i have voted in every election since i was 18… and all of my children vote… we live in New York… but if we lived in Cal… you can bet we would be voting NO… i like this story,… then again i like every thing you write… PPS

    5. Hahaha!!!: “I’m sure that was entertaining for you,” Tina said. Beautifully and intelligently written, swimmer. Of late, and despite my abhorrence to anything political, I too have obsessively been following the federal election in the States. If only you weren’t Canadian, my friend, I’d write you in on the ballot…”Swim for President!” :)

    6. Very nice, swimmie. I’ll be thinking of you for the Canadian elections. For the US ones…CA voters…vote down prop 8. For all US voters — if you don’t think your vote counts, think about the US Supreme Court. They can mess up your life for a long, long time. 9 reasons right there to vote Obama/Biden.

    7. Hey JKS, Powerful stuff. Loved how Bette provided a sound and logical argument at every turn. Now is a time to stand up for what you believe in. Volunteering is a great way to make a difference. Communication is a great way of showing people the choices that can be made and effect they might have on others. So many have lost their lives defending this right. It is our duty to vote. Thank you so much for showing that every political view has two sides. Loved it. Your Loyal Fan.

    8. Right on sister… I am Canadian too… so I am with you about the California bill…Knowledge is power… Make sure you know your rights and make them known out loud…

    9. i learned a lot from this little chapter and if i was allowed to vote, i would be doing it…alas, i have 4 more years before i can…i agree with Bette on everything

    10. this was great. since i live in the state of utah, where the mormon church is headquartered. i was a mormon for 49 of my 52 yrs, so i have a ‘special’ place in my heart for the institution that is so discrimanatory. an fyi swimmie. the church has asked its members, especially in CA, to use their (members) ‘resourses’, meaning time and money, to ban gay marriage. so as you can imagine its a big to do here. being that ive been on both sides, its very disconcerting to know that i worshipped with a church that now thinks im sick. even tho for 49 yrs i did what it asked. oh i dont know, stuff like getting married in the temple, having 4 children, sending a son on a mission. now theres something wrong with me. it makes me very frustrated and sad. but i loved your story. write when you can. thx

    11. Perhaps it’s time to update this story to reflect the state of our democracy now? I’m sure Bette Porter would have a field day with the current administration in light of the recent NEA cuts.
