The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 2, Chapter 13)
PART TWO: MAUI
Chapter 13
It was Patsy and Linda’s turn to swim while Bette and I sat on our blankets keeping an eye on our stuff.
I told Bette about my conversation with Howie in detail. She listened as she rubbed coconut oil into her arms and legs, squinting off toward the surf in the bright sunlight.
There were quite a few swimmers even though there was no lifeguard and there were posted warnings about an undertow. There had been a strong pull when I went in but even frail Linda was managing out there with Patsy keeping protective hands on her.
I laid back and turned onto my stomach, facing toward Bette, adjusting myself into a comfortable position, over those polished rocks moving under the blanket. I supported my head with one arm and the other arm I stretched along side my face. I closed my eyes and suddenly felt Bette squirting warm lotion on my back.
“I don’t want you to get sunburned,” she said protectively, as she began to rub the lotion into my shoulders. Then she undid the back of my bathing suit top and let the straps fall to my side. She massaged the lotion deep into my back as far down as my suit bottom. It felt really good. Then she rubbed the back of my legs and arms. When she finished, she connected the two straps again and kissed one of my shoulders as she laid on her side, toward me.
“Let‘s talk abut it, Sis,” she said, as she touched my free arm.
“Okay…..”
We were laying very close as we searched each other’s faces for a moment.
“We need a plan.” offered Bette.
“It depends on what Howie and I talk about tomorrow.”
“Do you want me to be there?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“ It just wouldn’t be right.“
“Well, if you need me, just call my cell.”
“I know Bette. Thank you for that. I don’t know what he’ll do or say but damn, something must have triggered him off today.”
“It sounds like he just got to thinking about us and riled himself up.”
“Remember how he was always in denial?”

Okay maybe I’m to fast thinking…but will bette or sissee ask the other to marry? great update!!
btw woooo im first lol
and I forgot to say…in the curch..will the question be in the curch
September, To answer your question of whether or not Bette and Sissee will talk about marriage. The answer is: eventually.
September, Will the question be in the church? No.
Your detail is once again truly amazing. I can feel B & S’s angst over Howie’s phone call and what lies in front of them. It won’t be easy and simple. Husband, kids, custody issues. Whew!!! You really have to be sure of your love to have the fortitude to wade through this hot mess. PPS.
Azmama, Yes, they are in for a messy situation, all around and let’s hope their love can withstand it. Meanwhile, thank you very much for your continued interest in the story and for enjoying the Maui scenic wonders that are so much a part of this adventure.
Azmama is soooo right. I feel bad for Howie because he has been good to her & the kids will probably be so shocked and angry for a while, I’m sure. A long bumpy road ahead for the both of them, but love will prevail. Thanks!
kbergin47, I guess we all agree on what you and azmama wrote. But I like your little spark of optimism, believing that true love will prevail. As usual, thanks for your interest.
Sissee, for some reasons, I found this chapter reveals the deep psyche of Sissee. She always loves Bette, she decided to marry Howie and have children to give up her true love. She also has affairs throughout her marriage (subconsciously thinking she shouldn’t marry Howie and he deserves another person?), but deep down she is waiting for Bette (or searching someone like Bette?). My question is: does she really love Howie when she said Howie deserves to have another person?) She has been waiting for Bette for more than 21 years, thinking about to be with Bette in the future. This is just the beginning of her new path, will she be able to leave Howie and stick with Bette from now on? Will Bette be able to leave Tina and Boo behind for Sissee (I seriously doubt that, with the plot development from TLW so far)? There is a lot of decisions to make for both Sissee and Bette. It’s not easy, that is for sure.
Bette’s Babe, No, no, Sissee did not voluntarily decide to marry Howie. Bette made that decision for her, inasmuch as Sissee was pregnant with Howie’s child. Remember, Bette told her later that it was one of the hardest things she ever had to do. She turned her back on Sissee thinking it was the best thing she could do for her. Now that in of itself is an example of true love. Sissee had affairs because she was always searching for those feelings that she shared with Bette when they were very young, in their early 20’s. She had no such feelings for Howie. She knew she could not have Bette. The best Bette offered her was friendship and Sissee took it. You might say that Bette and Tina shared a lot of chemistry. Everyone of us has said that at least 10 times, but what about the rest? That is where Sissee filled in for Bette. She and Bette knew how to communicate and became confidantes. Communication was sadly missing from the Bette/Tina couple. Chemistry alone does not make a perfect union even though most people seem to think so. Perhaps, Sissee secretly hoped she would get caught in her affairs because yes, then it would be a reason to leave Howie and let him have someone he deserved. Sissee, in that way was undermining her marriage and even trying to self-destruct it and if that didn’t work, she had that plan of always leaving Howie when the children were on their own. Your question was, “does Sissee really love Howie…” Perhaps in a way she did. He was a good husband., a good provider, a good father. It is easy to love “good” but loving someone with your heart and soul, emotionally and physically, like she loved Bette from the beginning is way different. So, there are different degrees of “love”, as I am sure you know and understand.
Sissee, thanks for your thorough analyses about what Sissee the character thinks about Bette, Howie, and herself. I seemed to forget the part where Bette was the one who asked Sissee to choose Howie because S has his child. Sometime I wonder why Sissee always thought Howie is a good husband (boyfriend). He was the one who acted on it when Sissee was drunk in the car, thinking of Bette subconsciously, and because of that, she was pregnant with their first child. Remember under the same influence (i.e., alochol), Bette almost made love with Sissee and the latter stopped Bette’s action? Sissee realized she could choose to wait for Bette instead of letting her being intimate with her while she was thinking of Tina. Did Sissee ever question that of Howie’s original motive? And not blaming him for what he did to her? Just wondering. The distinction of the two Cs (communication and chemistry) is a good way to summarize the relationship between B&S, and B&T. I didn’t think of it that way before. I really like your comment response as I can read more of what you think behind the story. Thanks S.
Bette’s Babe, No, no. Sorry but no one can fault Howie for making out with Sissee in that snow bank, because remember, Sissee was the aggressor. In her head she was transferring him into Bette, just like 20 years later, Bette transferred Sissee into Tina. Alcohol does strange things to people.
Bette’s Babe, Okay, glad you picked up on that. I would not want to mislead you. Thanks for your dedication.
Bette’s Babe, If you are still around, I should add to the above that Howie initiated the first kiss and Sissee responded eventually with passion, having Bette in mind.
Yes, Sissee, I am still around, in fact, I am reading the first adventure again this morning, just to refresh my memory to the storyline of B&S, S&H.
