“Dix!  Neuf!  Huit!  Sept!  Six!  Cinq!  Quatre!  Trois!  Deux!  Un!  Bonne Année! ”

The sounds of happy revelers rose from the street to the window where Lara Perkins stood.  She looked out upon the avenues of Paris, a city that she had called home for the past year.

Raising her near empty bottle of beer, she saluted the streets below and announced to the empty apartment, “Happy New Year.”  Turning, she let her gaze sweep across the living room.  The memories of her life in Paris were quickly being boxed away, with only odds and ends remaining strewn about the room in a haphazard manner.

With a tired sigh, she stepped over the suitcase in the middle of the floor and slouched onto the sofa.   Glancing at her wristwatch she let out a soft groan.  Only ten hours until her flight would depart for the U.S.  For the most part, it had been a good year, full of intense study and competition at Le Cordon Bleu; and she’d buried herself in work, honing her technique as much as she could.  It was only now; when she was faced with the prospect of returning to the U.S. did she realize her intensity had been a particularly productive symptom of avoidance.  With a safe distance of five thousand miles between her and the last year of Dana’s life, she’d been able to neatly shelve the emotions that had been so raw upon her arrival in France.  But now, with her return to the States looming, she realized that the unsettled feelings were still there, bubbling just below the surface.

If she were completely honest, it wasn’t so much the feeling of losing Dana that she was trying to suppress.  Rather, she was at odds with the memory of Alice in those last few weeks.  She remembered vividly the nights they’d spent comforting one another in the aftermath of Dana’s death.  She also remembered too clearly Alice’s reluctance in discussing the fact that they’d begun to take more time with one another during their evenings of consolation.  Lara was now beginning to realize that she’d felt trapped in the lack of relationship with Alice, and that had spurred her decision to flee.

But, she argued with herself, it had been a good year, and she’d accomplished a lot.  She’d received top honours in her class and had made friends out of colleagues who would challenge her throughout her career.

    1. Gold Gold Gold, so good to have you back. It’s pouring rain here today and you brought in a little sunshine with your new fic start. I really liked the parallel New Year’s celebration perspectives, and it does not cease to amaze me how nicely you work in backstories for Lara and Alice, intertwined with what we saw on the show. You know I love and miss the Lace pairing–and I’m so happy to see them through your eyes again. Can’t wait for the next update….! PPS

    2. Well, Lace is popular with me, and I’m very glad you’re writing this. I’m *still* annoyed at how they despatched Lara to SF without a proper goodbye to anyone. I really liked the start, I’ll be waiting for the next chapter. Thanks for posting.

    3. Well, I’m obviously a sucker for anything about Lara and Alice, and I’m so glad I’m not the only one keeping the ‘ship alive! Can’t wait to see where you’re going to take this story, and I eagerly anticipate the next update. Thanks for this.

    4. Great start. Despite my better judgment, I actually enjoyed Alice and Lara together for the one episode we saw of it. I was disappointed with the lack of closure on the relationship as well, although, not surprised they just dropped it like that. Can’t wait to see where you go with this. PPS.

    5. Gold, how is it possible that one chapter in, I’m totally addicted to this story? You’re making me miss Lace all over again, but I’m sure your story will fill in the gaping holes left in this relationship on the show. Though I have to say you fooled me with the first moment between Alice and Shane – I thought we were going to have some Shalice for a split second! Anyway, I’m very glad you’re writing once again, and I’ll be checking regularly for your update!

    6. here you are! i´m soooo glad to see you back at writing a new lace story :-)i´m just back from a friends birthday brunch. this is a perfect end for the day. can´t wait for more. big hug, naren
