    One step at a time…17

“Wheres Tina?” Bette asked, raising her voice to be heard over the sternum-throbbing music pulsing through the air at Moxie.

“What?” Alice yelled, swaying to the beat as she sipped her martini.

    “Tina. Where is Tina?”

“Shaking her groove thing,” Alice replied with a grin, nodding in the direction of the dance floor.

Bette surveyed the mass of gyrating women, searching for her girlfriend. Finally, she saw Tina, golden hair swinging loose around her shoulders, her whole body in motion. In motion, Bette noted with raised eyebrows, dangerously close to an attractive brunette.

“Dont get all psycho. Shes just getting down with her sisters,” Alice said, noticing Bettes expression of disapproval.

    “Her sisters?”

“Yeah. Her new ***** sisters,” Alice said, gesturing grandly to the packed room.

“That one is acting more like her kissing cousin,” Bette said, narrowing her eyes at the encroaching offender.

“Shes dancing. Not making out. Not doing the wild thing. She needed to let off some steam.”

Bette redirected her attention to Tina. Her eyes were closed, her head was thrown back, and she was smiling, completely lost in the music. There was a familiar hint of ecstasy in Tinas expression that made Bettes pulse quicken.

“Shes had a tough few days. It appears that youve cheered her up, though.”

“Yep. Me and blue agave can turn any frown upside down,” Alice admitted, pointing to Tinas empty margarita glass.

“How much closer could that woman get to her? Shes practically”

“Rambo,” Alice interrupted. “If youre that worried about it, go cut in.”

Bette started to protest but she changed her mind when the band launched into a percussive Latin number. “Ill be back,” she winked, unbuttoning her jacket and draping it over the chair with a flourish before making her way to the dance floor.

When Bette grabbed her hand, Tinas eyes shot open and her face registered irritation, confusion, and finally delight, all in the span of about three seconds.

“Hey Baby,” Tina effused, gathering Bette into a wraparound embrace and kissing her with gusto. “How long have you been here?”

“Long enough to watch everyone in the room checking you out,” Bette said, as the dark-haired interloper slunk off to funnel her attentions elsewhere.

Tina rolled her eyes, draping her arms around Bettes neck. “Are you here to lecture me or dance with me?”

“Im here to teach you a lesson,” Bette said, leaning closer to speak directly into Tinas ear.

“What kind of lesson?” Tina asked coyly.

“A salsa lesson.” Bette put her hands firmly on Tinas hips.

“That soundsintriguing. Where do we start?”

“We start right here,” Bette said, tightening her grip on Tinas hips. “First, close your eyes.”

Tina looked at Bette skeptically for just a moment before succumbing to her request.

“Good. Now, forget everything you know about rhythm.”

    “Everything?”

“Yes,” Bette breathed against Tinas cheek, and began tapping her thumbs against Tinas hip bones. “There. Listen. Do you feel it?”

Tina nodded, her hair brushing against Bettes face. “Yes. I feel it.”

    “Thats the clave,” Bette said.

“Clave,” Tina repeated, a slight frown wrinkling her brow.

“Youre thinking. Dont think. Feel,” Bette said. “Feel and follow.”

Bette kept her hands on Tinas hips, guiding her through a basic back-and-forth step, continuing to tap out the rhythm with her thumbs.

“Its a seduction. Im pursuing you, but youre not quite sure about me,” Bette said, her ***** brushing against Tinas. “First you pull away. But then you change your mind.”

“How did you learn?” Tina asked, blinking open her eyes to meet Bettes gaze.

“There was this artist” Bette said, her voice trailing off as a roguish smile crossed her face.

“Ill bet you have a lot of stories that start with, There was this artist.”

“Theyre all very short stories,” Bette said, continuing to lead Tina through the dance steps.

    “Is that so?”

“Mmhmm. Not much plot. Not a lot of character development. Plenty of conflict, though.”

    “No happy endings?”

“I was happy when they ended. Does that count?” Bette smirked.

“What are you working on these days? Another short story?” Tina asked, looking away for a barely discernible moment.

“Actually, Ive recently started something moresubstantive,” Bette said.

    “Really?”

    “Yes. Really.”

“Will it have a happy ending?” Tina asked.

    “Theres no end in sight.”
