    One and Only

    Chapter 70

Melvin had his own mini fridge and he took two good quality cut glass whiskey glasses from on top of a filing cabinet and added some ice to the glasses. Emma had removed her jacket, put her briefcase in a corner and had cracked open the seal on the scotch. Melvin put the glasses down and Emma added scotch to the glasses. She sat down and looked at him
“What shall we drink to ?” she asked
“Our daughters ?” he suggested “ That seems appropriate “
“I can do that – to our daughters “
    “To Bette and Tina “
Emma took a swig and the scotch burnt the back of her throat. She looked at Melvin. Rosemary hadn’t aged at all but he had – he looked his age – the same age that they all were. He had aged well though – he was still a handsome man. At college he had been really stand out handsome – now he was more mature and still good looking. Emma had loved arguing with him – he was not like some of his peers who didn’t dare to challenge her – he had challenged her and he had really helped her develop her reasoning skills. But youth had not come with restraint – she had gone too far and so had he. Neither had been mature enough to climb down – even for their partners. Kate and Rosemary had desperately wanted them to find some common ground – but their egos had been too big and probably too frail to admit they were wrong. Maybe now over 20 years later their daughters would succeed when their partners failed.
“I have been going to come and see you for weeks. I promised Tina that I wouldn’t let the feud between us come between them and I meant it. They have done nothing wrong at all”
Melvin sipped him scotch and nursed the glass.
    “I know “
“I want them to be happy and they are. But this morning Bette was scared and unhappy – she came to see Tina and she was in tears”
He looked upset by what Emma had said.
“I should have spoken to her last night after I had spoken to Rosie”
“Kate has taken Rosie for a drink – I should tell you that”
Melvin sighed “I hate the thought that they are upset. But I have watched them excluding me for the last few months and that’s been hard to see. Last night – well last night she had got back from spending the weekend at Tina’s father’s house and she looked tired and happy. It would have been nice if she could have shared that with me – instead we had an uncomfortable conversation when she kept asking me to make peace with the two of you for her mom’s sake. I just wanted her to say that she wanted me to make peace for the sake of her and Tina”
“I am sorry Melvin. I do know that if it was me – if Tina had told Kate and not me – well I would have been very upset”
“I was – for weeks I have seen what was happening”
“And you don’t have an issue with it ? It did concern them that you would have an issue with her being gay”
He inhaled deeply and let out a sigh “She’s got a lot about her. She’s smart – real smart. Way smarter than I was at her age – she can do anything that she wants. What worries me is how much otherness she has to deal with – she is shy and introverted, she’s bi-racial and she is a lesbian – that’s more than any of us had to deal with when we were at college “
“It is a very different era now”
“Still plenty of bigots and crazies around – you know that  – you get as many as me through your office”
“True – my crazies tend to have bigger bank balances but that doesn’t make them any less insane. But I don’t think either will have to face the grief that Kate and I got . And Bette isn’t going to face what you did “
“You want to protect your kids as much as you can. I don’t have an issue with her being gay. I know enough to know that its just who she is. I am glad she’s come out now – its better than spending years trying to be straight and being unhappy. I have gay friends and one guy didn’t come out until he was 40 – even though he knew his whole life and so did we. I would hate for Bette to have that life”
Emma nodded – that was good. She had a feeling she would know if he was lying about him accepting Bette’s sexuality and he passed with flying colours – he didn’t have a problem with Bette being gay and he did make a good point about how different Bette was.
“Melvin – I will not patronise you but I will say that the people who mind about Bette being so different do not matter and the people who matter to her – well they will not mind. I know it’s a saying but its true – and she doesn’t seem to worried about it”
“She’s not as street wise as some of her friends “
“She will learn and as much as we try and protect them from everything  – we cannot. I know that’s a hard lesson to learn but its true. They are young adults and they are going to keep on growing up. There is no reverse switch on that process “
He nodded “I know that “
“So – what about who Bette is dating ?”
Melvin drained his scotch and added more of Emma’s scotch to his glass and offered the bottle to her. She drank her scotch and held the glass out for a re-fill. Melvin lent back and looked at Emma.
“The first time I saw Tina we had gone to the Park to watch Bette’s first 10k race and I saw this blonde. I knew who she was even before she walked over to introduce herself – that took some guts. She is a stunning young woman and she’s a credit to you and Kate. She looks like you – she smiles like Kate and she has a lovely personality. “
“Maybe she has inherited your taste in women “ Emma said fondly
    Melvin laughed “Maybe “

    1. Wow there was more to the separation than we first thought. I wonder what happened? It seems that Emma has not really changed a bit. My sympathy goes to Melvin

    2. OMG..I didn’t see that coming either. Oh my, I see problems down the road with this. Hopefully the parents will use good judgement and avoid having this information come out!

    3. And the plot thickens…i wondered if, perhaps, rosemary and either emma or kate might have had a fling, but i expected it was before melvin. But an affair…how unexpected…i can see this coming out no matter how hard they try ro hide it. Guess thats why rosemary wanted a private discussion when she arrived homes

    4. Well, well I thought more that Melvyn had at least hit on Kate, and that was the reason for the angst! I new there had to be something personel between them for the bitterness,,,,more soon please ally..x

    5. Not surprised. Something of that nature would have had to happen for him to hate Emma that much. She infringed on his property or so he thought and he could never forgive her. I was curious when the dreaded came up between the ladies of who had an affair with whom. Never thought it would have been between Emma and Melvin because Emma would have never let a man between her ivories. Wondered it if could have been Kate and Rosemary and realized that Kate would never have an affair because of her devotion to Emma. So the only conclusion was what has been revealed. You never stop being the true drama queen AllyE. Thanks for sharing this wonderful story with us. you’re AWESOME!

    6. WOW… and here i would of bet melvin and emma or kate had a fling in college… great twist… great story… please don’t end this one… we need about 100 more chapters… thx ally

    7. Thank you for another amazing chapter of this superb story. You write so incredibly well and tell such a great story. Always look forward to a post from you. Bette and Tina’s relationship flows pretty well and the hurdle presented was meant to get everyone on the same page. Melvin has to take credit for what happened between him and Bette based upon how she felt he would react based on her experiences with him. Sometimes the reflection back at us isn’t too pretty, but we have to look at it seriously to grow from it. I’m quite happy that Melvin and Emma cleared the air between them. They have forgiven but not forgotten. Now both families can moved forward with healing and new love. Thanks Ally!

    8. I been away for a while-but I see my guess in the orginal story “Is This Love” was right and that Rosemary was with Emma. This going to be so good. The truth has to come out.
