Old Friends Chapter 2
Summary of the previous chapter: Tina gets a visit from Alex, Bettes childhood friend. Alex tries to give Tina some insight into Bette.
James was sitting at his desk and was approached by a woman he had never before seen.
Hi, Im here to see Bette Porter.
Is Ms. Porter expecting you?
Yes, please tell her that I am here to discuss the million dollar contribution I will be making to the CAC.
James was aghast, but in his job, one never knew. He buzzed Bettes office to let her know.
Seconds later, Bette came storming out of her office. James was filled with dread over the fury he was about to face. He was surprised to see Bette actually approach him with a smile. James, do not believe anything this woman tells you. She is a pathological liar.
The woman laughed and turned to James. And this woman is a pathological *****.
Truer words had never been spoken to James ears.
The two women embraced and began walking down the hall toward Bettes office.
You look good Alex.
Id say the same for you Betty, but Id be lying.
What the ***** is that supposed to mean?
Oh, youre as beautiful as ever, but I can see it is your eyes.
Bette sunk down into her desk chair. Ive really fucked up this time.
Yeah, you have. But, youve fucked up before and always managed to fix it.
This time, it is different.
Its still fixable Betty.
Your lips to Gods, or in this case, Tinas ears.
Ive gotta go meet with the publisher. I hope youll come to my hotel after?
I still wish you would stay with us.
The last thing that you and Tina need is me there. Besides, I went through a lot of trouble to sneak those bottles of Hungarian Merlot through customs. Youve gotta come and help me drink it. It wouldnt be any fun to drink around Tina with her being pregnant and all.
Alright, where are you staying?
Alex gave Bette the name of her hotel. See you around six?
Alex left Bette in her office and headed out for her meetings. She hated driving in L.A. although after some of the places she had been, it was relatively tame. She was looking forward to spending some time with Bette. After Catherine had died, Alex began traveling; but she had always made it a point to come back to visit Bette. After Bette and Tina became a couple, Alex always came at least twice a year to spend time with them. During the last year she hadnt made her usual visits, relying on email and occasional letters to keep in touch.
Since they had met in elementary school, Alex and Bette had remained friends despite all of the differences in the courses their lives had taken. Given the history they shared, Alex knew more about Bette than anyone. She knew things that Bette had never told Tina. Alex hoped that she could help bridge the gap between the lovers who were meant to be.
It was shortly after 6:00 when Bette arrived at Alexs hotel door.
