If everyone met for coffee this morning at the Planet…

"I’m not registered," Dana said with a shrug.
The server approached the table with their morning coffee orders.
"What do you mean you’re not registered?" Bette asked sternly. "You’re going to be registered by the time you have to vote, right?"
"I’ve never voted," Dana admitted. "I was always away – at tournaments, or training. Plus my parents expected me to register as a Republican. I just couldn’t do it."
"You’ve never voted?" Tina asked, incredulous. "Then you give up your right to complain."
"You know that what party you register for is no one else’s business," Shane interjected, finally able to speak after downing her first double shot. "You have to be your own person."
"See, even Shane votes," Alice joined everyone in chastising Dana.
"Thanks Al," Shane said. "Appreciate it."
"Sorry Shane, but you’re not exactly the picture of a responsible member of society," Alice said.
"That’s not making it better Alice," Tina nudged her with an elbow to get her to stop while she was behind.
"I donate to important causes," Dana defended herself. "I volunteer."
"Goddamn it, it’s past the registration deadline for this year," Bette was on her phone, looking up how to register. "The deadline was yesterday in California."
Groans of disappointment emanated from everyone at the table. Except Dana.
"It’s okay, She can get registered for next time," Tina offered. "Midterms are only two years away and you don’t want to leave it until another deadline is approaching."
"Good point," Bette nodded. "I’m emailing you the information Dana. Promise me you’ll do it."
"Promise all of us," Shane said.
"Okay, I will," Dana said. "I didn’t think it was such a big deal."
"Watch the news coverage when a country’s citizens have just been granted the right to vote," Shane said. "They line up for hours to exercise the right they’ve never had before."
"You don’t appreciate something until you no longer have it," Tina said. "Registering to vote, and then voting, tells those in power that the electorate is engaged. That we care and are paying attention."
"And that they’ll be held accountable," Bette interjected.
"Your vote is your voice," Shane continued.
"I said I’d do it!" Dana looked around the table, in an effort to stem the criticism. "And I will."
A silence descended on them after the brief exchange ended. They soon moved on to topics that were less controversial.
They were about to go their separate ways when Tina placed her hand on Dana’s forearm in an effort to have a private conversation.
"Sorry we kind of ganged up on you," Tina said. "I think it took us by surprise that you’ve never voted before."
Shane ambled up and held her arms out for a hug. Dana accepted the offer.
"You’re gonna do it, right?" Shane said as they embraced.
    "I am," Dana said.
"We love you," Shane offered as she backed away.
"Love you guys too," Dana replied, glancing at all of them.
"But especially me, right?" Alice asked.
"Yes, Alice, especially you," Dana rolled her eyes.
The awkwardness of the friends’ morning interaction gave way to a greater understanding among them. They parted ways nurturing a renewed interest in sharing more about their opinions on matters of importance.
    (the end.)

    1. This is such an important right, please don’t take it for granted. If you do you could find your government (including people like Paul Ryan, John Boehner and Eric Cantor) turning your uterus into theirs. My ballot was mailed yesterday! ROCK THE VOTE!!

    2. My first election this year cuz I just became a citizen. I’m excited to vote :) and please keep more stories coming, I’m feeling spoiled ;)

    3. Voting is the only power we’ve got. The only chance we have to say what we think. The only time we are asked to interfere. We are the change we want to see.
