A doctor walked in during Melvin’s tiered. She looked at him.
“I am here to see Bette Porter” she said.
Binks squeezed her hand and left. Melvin said he would check on her later.
The first thing Bette noticed about the doc was she had kind eyes.
“Hello Miss Porter, I am Carmen Morales your doctor. I am here to help you on the road to remission. I just have a few questions…When did this start?”
“I have been doing this for ten years”
“So…you’re very good at hiding this. What made you get caught?”
“I am very good at it, that is an odd thing to say most people just assume that they figured it out and that’s why I am here”
“Well, I want to know what makes you the maddest, getting caught or being here?”
“Both actually. Being caught represents a sense of failure in the aspect that it was something that I owned all to myself, I was good at that. I had not been caught, people had no clue. But now people know and are disappointed. Being here is like being in a cage. People are looking at me and treating me like a child, telling me what I can and can’t have. And it is pissing me off that people think they need to control my life…” Bette said her voice full of anger.
“Well Bette, the way you chose to control things got you here” said Carmen, “I want to help you not internalize your feeling and find some other way to express than punishing your body, and help you mentally as well. Our next appointment is in two days. I will be making a home visit. I know that it might seem a bit intrusive but you need someone to hold you accountable at this point and that’s me.”
She gave Bette her card with her number and left. Bette pulled out her note book and began to write.
“Bette Porter…the weight of my name that began long ago when I realized that Melvin was my dad. I had expectations to meet to see me be the perfect daughter, the prefect student. The only thing I had to myself was my love of women, what I put into my mouth. Being gay is a disappointment to him but I have never felt shame about that so I never felt the need to hide it. But with food it was different. It was something you need to live but I saw it as a tangible thing that was completely up to me. Night after night I wonder when it will end. It is like I am running this race but it seems so hard to win”

Tam, you have done a great job at taking on a delicate topic such as bulemia. I feel for the character of Bette Porter which you have created. Unfortunatley, as long as she tries to please others, meet their standards, while disregarding all the beauty of herself, she will continue down this destructive and damaging path. She needs to let go of those that have had a hand in bringing such harmful behavior to the surface, and embrace those that truly love her for her as a human being. Hey, just send her the quote that is next to my pic on my Myspace Page. * wink * Thanks for doing this storyline justice.
Ty yeah I am a Binks,,,but more of a Kinks fan, love Kendall and Bianca Bette was expected to be a perfect daughter to her father and to herself. As a person we put so much pressure on ourselves to be what others expect us to be and not be just OURSELF!!! So we go into somekind of a destruction of sorts, Bulimia,drinking,drugs,gambling to make us feel better. But it’s only for a short period, in the long run we destroy ourselves before we can actually save oneself!!! Great story and hope to read more, take care T!!
I hope Tina continues to be there for Bette as she is battling her demons because Bette needs her so much and vice versa. PPS and maybe I’ll throw some more hotness your way! ;-)

Hey, wow.. so this came at an interesting point; I just finished a conversation about dietary habits with a friend before I clicked this open. I’m sorry to hear you’ve been suffering recently. I hope you’re doing okay. This might be a little upfront, but if you need an ear, I’m here. And yeah, it’s cliché but it’s true :) PM or email, it’s a totally open offer. As for the story, I’m glad you’re still pursuing it. I think there’s a lot that people who haven’t directly experienced these sorts of things don’t understand. Your accounts make it easier to understand and for sufferers to seek some level of understanding. I can easily empathise with Bette in this story and although that’s a sign of good writing, I want you to know that this story goes further than that. It’s more than just good writing, this shows courage; you’ve shared with us a piece of yourself and opened the door on an aspect of life that’s often secluded and that takes more than a literary talent. You possess both, thankfully and so this story isn’t just some half-arsed attempt at Realism. It’s delving into a condition that’s socially very taboo. Thank you ever so much.
