    Heart-Shaped Box, Ch. 23

Jenny stepped off the plane, clutching her carry-on bag protectively against her thin body. She was here…home. Far away from L.A.: from Tim and Marina. She was leaving all of that behind her. Running from your problems never solved anything, Jenny knew, but she figured it couldnt hurt anything, either. She had nowhere else to go.

Jenny sighed as she rode the escalator down to the baggage claim. It had all come to this. Here she was, heartbroken (twice in such a short period, no less), divorced, confused, and basically homeless…and all before the age of twenty-five. This wasnt exactly the life shed imagined for herself. Now Jenny was reduced to moving back in with her parents, whom shed given as few details as possible to. Better to keep them in the dark.

Jenny stepped off the escalator, feeling bitter. Such is life, she thought sadly, following the crowd of travelers to the baggage claim.

    Back at Bette and Tinas

So she just up and left? Alice asked incredulously.

Apparently, Bette remarked, setting the letter down.

I wonder if she knows Marinas back, Shane mused.

Should we even tell Marina? Tina wondered.

They all looked at each other, unsure. Sure, Jenny hadnt told them to tell her, but Marina did deserve to know. But to have said her goodbyes in a letter…how impersonal. Besides, Marina had suddenly disappeared for weeks, abruptly leaving the country for some reason, and was suddenly back in their lives just as Jenny was leaving.

Wait, whats Marinas story, anyways? Where the ***** has she been? Alice questioned.

Im not sure. She was pretty vague when I saw her last night, Bette admitted.

I guess we should tell Dana about Jenny, Tina put in.

Ill call her, Shane and Alice said at the same time. They glared daggers at one another.

Bette cleared her throat loudly. Ahem. No fighting, remember?

Ill call her, Tina offered, settling the matter as Shane and Alice grumbled.

I suggest we call a little impromptu meeting at The Planet, Alice proposed, wadding up her napkin and wiping a puddle of syrup off the table. No offense to your coffee, Bette, but…well, you know theirs is better. Besides, I want to get the dirt on Marina.

The others nodded, and Tina excused herself to call Dana.

    1. Judging from the previous behavior that Jenny had been displaying, why would we expect anything else from her? Afterall if Jenny had given Marina the smallest of chances then she might not have had to tuck her tail and run,so to speak.. Yes someone should tell Marina about Jenny’s leaving town;Jenny probably only left anyway because she thought that there wasn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that she would ever see Marina again..
