Chapter 4

A few hours later, they were woken up with Bette’s cell phone ringing. It took a minute for Bette to come back to consciousness and realize what was making the noise. She reached for it and caught it in time to speak to the person on the other end. “Hello,” She said sleepily as she turned it on.

“Miss Porter?”

“Yes, this is she, what can I do for you?” she replied a she sat up in the bed.

“I’m so sorry to bother you. This is the front desk and I was just wondering if everything was okay in your cabin? I know that the snows have fallen and are quite deep and that sometimes creates difficulties. We have the snowplow coming in tomorrow to clear away the snow on the roads and on the pathways.”

“Well, we are having a problem with the hot water heater as it lost its ability to heat water. I tried to take a shower but the water went cold almost immediately.”

“Thank you for reporting that. I was hoping that the repairman had fixed it. I apologize for the inconvenience. If you look in the mudroom, you’ll find a tin tub that is big enough to take a quick bath if you need one. There are two pots that you can fill with water and set on the stove to heat. They’re in the little closet to the right of the sink.

After the snowplow clears the snow away, I’ll have the plumber bring in a new hot water heater. Again, I’m so sorry for the inconvenience.”

“Thank you, I think we can make it work. It’s so lovely here and the snow only enhances it.”

“Yes, you’re quite right, well, is there anything else that you need?”

“No, we’re all stocked with food and wood for the fireplace and it feels very cozy inside.”

“Yes, the cabins are all very insulated so no worries there. Well, if you need anything else, please call the office and we shall do our best to assist you.”
