    Communication 101

As the woman she loved dozed, Bette’s gaze flicked from her face to the pristine sheets so out of place with the rest of the ratty motel room they were holed up in. She had purchased them earlier that afternoon, fearful of the old sheets provided by the two star establishment. Raised to want for nothing but the best, she couldn’t very well be caught blemishing her skin by frolicking around in what were presumably piss stained sheets. She knew Tina wouldn’t have blinked an eye though. Had she been awake when they arrived, the blonde would have playfully criticized her need to change them. Bette could close her eyes and almost see the soft smile on the blonde’s face while she propped herself on the bed, mischievously patting the expanse of beige bedding. ‘The sheets are washed Bette, don’t be so snotty’ she’d tease.

Bette studied the still figure so deep in sleep while she reminisced about their one and only camping trip together.  Tina had relished the thought of ‘roughing it’, excitement had sparkled from her vibrant hazel eyes and Bette had grumbled at every turn, requesting that they opt for one of the luxurious cabins on offer instead of economical form of camping. She whined and pressed until Tina succumbed to her will.

They camped in style that summer, enjoying everything their site at the National Park had to offer. It wasn’t until a few weeks later when she uploaded the photos that she saw what she had been too blind to take in during the trip. Glimmers of disappointment where there should have been face-transforming smiles.

How had she not noticed Tina’s palpable disappointment, was Tina so practiced at concealing her emotions or was Bette truly that heedless. She couldn’t say but she had apologized for her unintentional callous ways and the blonde had forgiven her, just as she had so many times before.

Now Tina looked relaxed, peaceful even. Despite the awkward positioning of her arms, her breathing was slow and deep showing no signs of discomfort.  Bette only hoped that when she woke she would be as forgiving as she had been in the past. What she anticipated however was not forgiveness, threats of murder perhaps, but she knew Tina would be hard pressed to forgive her.
