Bette Porter left her office and ventured down the labyrinth of corridors. She didn’t really have to think about where she was going, her feet led the way, a mind of their own.
She had walked the length and breadth of this hospital so many times that finding her way through the impressive collection of buildings had become second nature.
Clad in light blue scrubs, which hung loosely on her slender frame, she carried on walking whilst busily tying the cords of her jolly snowman scrub cap.
She was not one of those superstitious surgeons. She did not have a favourite cap, she just liked to match them to her moods or maybe the season or even better to match an upcoming holiday.
Right now, Illinois was in the grips of a brutal winter, hence her choice of head coverage and the snow was piled up high outside. The forecasters had warned the people of Chicago but yet the freshly fallen snow had still astonished everyone when they had woken up that morning. Inclusive of Bette.
The doctor had always found the first fall of snow truly enchanting. To her, it possessed a magical aura, falling silently for hours and hours as people slept. A vast transformation taking place behind closed curtains.
And when people opened those drapes as morning came with a frigid breath, they would gasp, discovering a world completely changed, enveloped by a layer of snow which masked what the city once was.
Passing a window, Bette glanced briefly at the world outside. The cold wind ran delirious through the street of the aptly named windy city and people scurried along, sheltering themselves as best they could. It really felt like the wind would lacerate anyone who faced it ill-equipped.
Securing her scrub cap with two steady hands, feeling around it to make sure her impressive mane of brown curly hair had been safely absconded below it, she arrived on the general surgery floor greeting the early shift of pink scrub wearing nurses, already busily going about their day.
"Good morning Doctor Porter," the first jovial nurse bellowed.
"Good morning Nancy," Bette smiled at the portly fifty something year old woman who stood on the other side of the nurse’s desk handing her a chart.
