    Air Supply, Chapter 7

(Previously…Amertadi had just told Bette off and told her to show herself out.  Now, Bette’s at a loss after that conversation and she’s not sure what to do.  She walks over to the hallway that leads to Emma’s bedroom and she stands there.  She rubs her forehead and then chats with herself… ‘Okay, well now what?’  She walks over to the door of the bedroom and knocks.)

“Emma…Emma please…can we talk?”  No response is heard.  “I’m coming in Emma…we need to talk about this…”  Bette tries to open the door, but it’s locked.  “Oh you’re joking!  Come on Em…Please!”  She waits…but there’s no reply.  “Look, I can be as stubborn as you can…I’m not leaving.”  She waits.  She hears the doorknob being activated and anxiously awaits the next moments…

The door opens and a stern Emma faces her…“I have nothing to say to you.  Clearly you’ve decided how to ‘handle’ our relationship.”  Bette reaches for Emma’s face… “Please…”  Emma pulls her hand away slowly.

“I’m tired Bette.”  Bette looks at her and steps into her space, attempting to push her way slowly in and she simultaneously tries to touch her face again.  Emma tries to stop her, but Bette’s forehead touches Emma’s as her body takes advantage of Emma’s lack of leverage, and Bette finds herself in a tense but nonetheless warm frontal contact with the younger woman.

She confesses to Emma, “I’m sorry.”

“For what?  Treating me like an anonymous fling?  Or failing to trust me?  Or for not managing to hide your past from me?”  Bette pulls her face back a bit and holds Emma’s face with one hand while grasping her hip with the other.

“I think you know it’s more complicated than that.”

A bit sarcastic, but deadpan…“No…I think it’s actually more basic, more simple…elementary really…”

Bette’s eyes dart back and forth… “She was my life…”

Even more sarcastically, “Oh thanks.  Are you trying to cheer me up or let me down easy!”

“Would you listen please?  I said ‘was’.  Tina…was the love of my life.  We have a child together.  She’ll always be a part of my life.  Nothing, at least nothing as far as I can foresee, will ever change that.  But we’re not together anymore.  We’re not life partners anymore.  We’re not lovers anymore.  You and I are…present tense.  And as for everything else, I…well I guess I just needed to think about things.  You’re her junior, her student really…I just wasn’t sure yet what approach to take.  And as for you knowing…it’s not what you’re making it out to be.  Ultimately, what’s between us is between us…no one else has anything to do with that, and something or someone that doesn’t impact ‘us’…well, what’s there to really discuss with you?  I also wasn’t sure where this was going…and to be honest with you, I still don’t know.  But I’m open to the possibilities.  It’s just that I live each day as it comes; I learned long ago to not plan, not envision my future, not rely on anyone or anything…just take one day at a time.  So basically, our relationship is nobody’s business.  Tina is who she is and is part of my life, but our relationship has nothing to do with her.  And my relationship with her, such as it is, has nothing to do with you, and it won’t have anything to do with you.  If it ever were to affect our relationship then maybe you’ll have every right to know, to ask, to be a part of my decisions.  But right now, all that’s happening in the present is that you and I are together and nothing or no one that I can tell affects that.  I’m just asking you to put things into perspective.”

    1. Thanks Lamentamini! I can’t believe I had been inserting Bailey for Bassey! Someone had commented about it and it just stuck! So…we’re back to Bassey…:)

    2. OOO, can’t wait for the shit to hit the fan. Can you perhaps gives a glimpse of what happened when Bette and Schmidt almost came to blows? That sounds like it was pretty intense! Post soon! P.S-Don’t worry about the long post because I am sure we all love them! The longer the better, trust me!

    3. Hey Merlin, What’s with the apology for the long post?? That’s just a positive for me… ten pages and I’m still wanting more. Seems the next chapter may provide Bette the poo sandwich she’s due, though Emma and Bassey gave her a nice appetizer. Sorry to hear about the hair… you didn’t show him a picture of Shane, did you?? Love the post.

    4. Greetings and salutions to you, Merlin, Thank you so much for another fine chapter. I love the mix of characters in this tall tale. Good to see Bette being honest with Emma but then the fight with Tina showed that there was still a spark there. I am a diehard TIBetter and hope that these gals can rekindle their relationship here. Bette is simply playing the field until she realizes that she wants Tina and to get there relationship another try. I think that Emma’s desire to love Bette might just push her away. Good to see Bassey giving the gals a proper telling off for their ill-advised discussion. It did seem petty. Can’t wait to see wher you will lead me to but please but rest assured that I am in it for the long haul. Thank you so much for sharing this splendid story with me. Your Loyal Fan.

    5. Tina is not blind nor deaf, Hospitals are a field of gossip. Bette should know better to date some that Tina is her boss. Put the shoe on the other foot, how would bette feel???? thanks for posting

    6. I get the feeling that there is way more to Tina’s feelings towards Bette than Bette has towards Tina. I can’t wait to read what happens to Bette when she realizes that Tina does suspect and what the head of the department will do when she gets wind of this. I agree with Lamentamini, a boring B&T is better than no B&T. Besides I love boring, because boring can lead to a lot of free play (between B&T).

    7. Hey Merlin,I just caught up on the last 2 chapters and wow. Something tells me that Ms Jane Doe will hold the key to getting our girls together. How can bette be so stupid and think that tina doesn’t know and that it wouldn’t bother her????????????? Tina knows that she is still in love with bette and bette knows that she is still in love with tina, otherwise she wouldn’t be sleeping with most of the female staff!!!!I look forward to the next chapter.

    8. Does the hospital have a written policy about staff fraternizing? If not I still think Bassey and Schmidt should butt out unless they want to intervene as friends and mentors rather than bosses. Maybe Bette cruising the hospital hallways isn’t the most politic thing for her to do, but at the same time her playmates would have known what they were getting involved with. Tina needs to figure out what she realy feels. I can understand her confiding in Shane and I can understand Shane supporting her, but I was surprised to react in such an authoritarian manner.

    9. Merl, Bette cannot be that dumb and blind. Tina doesn’t know (lol). I’m with Bassey on this one, just sit back and watch the sh*t hit the fan. This BAT triangle is so entertaining, although I feel sorry that poor Amertadi is way over her head with Bette. Either I’m not fully awake, or it’s getting a little confusing with all these BB&MM names(Bassey, Betty, Madeleine, Melinda). Thanks for the update.
