After Dinner (Time of Day 34)

The dinner was a simple family meal, as requested. At Bette’s house, as requested.

Putting Angelica to bed, less simple. This may have been due to the girl’s continuing teething. But it was probably also due to her mothers’ hesitation to be alone with each other. The toddler’s unease at going to sleep reflected the unease of the adults putting her to bed.

With that task finally accomplished, Bette and Tina retired to the living room.

“Well.” Tina, seated on the couch, at this point was not bothering to hide her nervousness.

“Well,” Bette replied. “I’m going to have a drink. Can I get you something?”

    “Wine?”

Bette poured a glass of a syrah for Tina, a single-malt Scotch for herself.

Although Tina lifted an eyebrow at Bette’s choice, she did not comment further.

“What do you propose?” Bette asked, finally, breaking the silence.

“Maybe, I don’t know. Maybe this is the wrong thing to do,” Tina started, her fingers tracing up and down the stem on the glass that she had set on the end table. “But it seems like when we were together before, we just picked up and went on, ignoring the obvious.”

“You mean my fucking around on you,” Bette spat out as she paced around the room as if cornered in a cage.

“Bette.” Tina’s tone was less accusatory.

“No, I want to do this. I want to get this over with.”

“I’m past being angry. I just don’t understand why.”

    “Why did you fuck Henry?”

Despite the directness of the question, Tina knew to expect this, and it was a question that she’d been asking herself quite a bit, especially lately. “I think I was afraid.”

    “Of me?”

“Of trusting you. Of being so involved with you that I again failed to be my own person.”

“I never made you dependent on me, Tina. Quitting your job, that was your choice.”

“I know. I see that now.” Tina patted on the couch cushion, but Bette resumed her pacing. “But at the time, Angelica, money, it was all overwhelming.”

    “And fucking Henry was easier?”

“Yes. Being with a woman is so incredible, so intimate. It’s something I’ve never felt with a man.”

“He was safe.” Bette’s words had gone from angry to accusing.

“And what was Candace?” The question was asked before Tina really had time to think of the best phrasing, if there were a best phrasing possible.

    “She was there.”

    “And I wasn’t.”

    “T.”

“I wasn’t, Bette.” The memories, the frustration brought burning tears. Tina wiped at her eyes, annoyed at her penchant to cry under stress. “I couldn’t be there for you. I was so fucking lost. So fucking alone.”

“T.” This time the name was said in a much softer tone. This time Bette took the seat next to Tina, putting a hand over her shoulder.

“I had one job. One. I fucked it all up.”

“It was a miscarriage, Tina. You couldn’t have prevented it.”

“I know that. Logically, I know that. But I still feel that loss. That failure.”

“I know.” Bette rubbed her hand on Tina’s back, drawing the blonde woman closer.

“I lost myself. I lost the baby. Then I lost us. I lost you.” With that Tina broke down into wrenching sobs.

Bette held her. She wiped Tina’s tears, and her own, placing tender kisses on Tina’s face, her eyes. Rocking her.

“I couldn’t do this for you,” Tina said, finally. “You needed this, too.”

“I did,” Bette admitted. “I just didn’t realize it.”

    (the end)

    Comments

    1. Fell behind again, sorry. It is about time that they sat down and discussed both Candace and the men issues, especially Henry. There has always been accusations, crying and a lot of screaming but no real communication and definitely no real answers.

    2. Finally, they talk. Will the talking continue, because you make them talk really well, Pseud. unlike those people writing the show. Well, except for AM Homes. Anyway, I continue to lurk and look forward to your next post.

    3. Really, this is the best sleepless jet lag time I have spent in quite a while. I enjoy your writing and this story so much, you really need to be posting the next time I take a trip. : )

    4. Well, I’m really glad you posted, especially if you’ve got to be away for awhile. Length is a non-issue; this chapter was an important step. At least they’ve acknowledged some of the big issues… totally getting past them, now that’s another kettle of fish. I think they can do it, though. Don’t let the stress get you down, pseud. Thanks for the chapter, ’twas excellent as usual.

    5. Love where this is going. I particularly liked this sentence of Tina: ‘Being with a woman is so incredible, so intimate’. Hope to read more soon. Thanks.

    6. you made my day, week, month, the whole thing … i love your posts, short, long, whatever. i feel their pain. candace and henry need to be put to sleep. for good. single malt for bette, eh? she knew what was coming. admission. awareness. acceptance. moving on. okay, i need to stop rambling. thanks and please post soon!

    7. Loved it, as always. Too short but you knew that and I, we, definitely do not want to add to your stress. Not what this place, these folks are about. Write when you can, we’ll be waiting because we adore this story and your writing. And just remember “In with the hate, out with the love.” It works everytime. That or a very large foot up the a** should do the trick.

    8. o hi. Sorry, I know this comment is lame. It was either this or say something generic, so let’s go for random, huh? I like pie. =) I need to sleep more. LOL

    9. OK, they’ve begun to address The Bad Things they’ve done to each other. Will they start to deal with each other with both honesty and compassion so they can avoid doing further Bad Things to each other?

    10. Awesome as usual. They have so much to get off they’re chests, and get over. Once they do they can really start working on being a couple again.

    11. Pseud, Great to see the reality of what both gals have been through coming to the fore. They really need to share this information. Saying something out loud can make it real but also means that it can be dealt with and closed. Bette and Tina need to resolve their past action before they can live in the present and look forward to their future. Insightful as ever. And fabulous. Can’t wait until your next post. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
