A Chance Encounter – chapter 24
Bette and Tina decided to have their commitment ceremony the very same day of their first anniversary. «Do you think your parents will come?», Bette asked Tina as she began writing the guests lists. It was late Saturday morning, the day after the proposal, and they were still both in bed.
«I could ask them. They’ve come a long way since I told them about us», Tina said. And that was true. Three months after getting out of the hospital, Tina’s parents had flown to L.A. to spend some time with them. Mr Kennard had met Kit who had been more than happy to autograph one of her albums for his friend. When they had left for home, they had seemed pleased to see Tina so happy.
«What about your father? Do you think he will come?»
Bette smile faded. «I don’t know… I’ll call him this week»
Tina sensed Bette’s sadness and stroked her arm. «I’m so sorry sweetie that your father doesn’t accept who you are. I know it upsets you»
Bette turned to Tina. «I don’t know why, he’s been like this for years. You think I would be used to it by now»
Bette went on with her list. «OK, we’ll invite Shane, Alice, and my sister Kit, of course. Should we asked them to bring dates ?», Bette wondered.
«Well, Dana will certainly come with Lara and Shane has been seeing Pam, but I don’t know if she’ll want to bring her. How about Phyllis ?»
Bette’s boss had become a great friend to Bette, especially since she had came out as a lesbian herself. «Yeah, I think she would be touched if we invited her»
Tina snuggled against Bette, putting her arms around her waist. «I can’t believe I’m planning my wedding, well my commitment ceremony, with you baby. Tina Porter, that has a nice sound to it», Tina said chuckling.
Bette smiled. «I don’t think you can take my name baby as much as I would want you to»
«I don’t care if it’s not written on any piece of paper, that is how I’ll think of me from that day on»
The two women worked hard to make this day very special. Invitations, menu, music, flowers, everything had to be coordinated. They went shopping to buy matching rings and found beautiful gold bands on Rodeo Drive. Everybody accepted their invitation, everybody except Bette’s father. Tina found her crying one day, just after she had talked to Melvin.
