Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 24: “Elementary, My Dear Watson”)

"The Earth will not be missed," the lecturer informs the students. "Through the infinite reaches of space, the problems of man seem trivial and naive indeed, and man existing alone seems himself an episode of little consequence."

    ~Rebel Without a Cause

It smelled like fresh carpet and saw dust. Both smells on the list of Ashley’s favorites. Right alongside mornings after it rained and zucchini bread fresh out of the oven. She glanced at her watch, wishing the lecture wouldn’t start for another hour. Her butt was sore from leaning against the railing, but she didn’t feel like sitting yet. The hundred or so students were rustling about, lumped together in mini-packs, like scheming hyenas planning their next big slaughter. Ashley fed off of character studies, high school students such easy prey. Each group of two to ten students were all of the same shapes and sizes, as if each pack was its own demographic, and scientists could look down at them from space, and map them all accordingly. Ashley had the urge to swipe them all up like a pile of jacks, shake them up, and roll them onto the sidewalk, each piece panicking at the unfamiliar turf. No one wanted to exit the safety zone, climb over the fence into the barren field, prepared to share words with the mysterious neighbors.

High school was supposed to be about socializing, making friends with someone you might never care to in ‘real’ life, and not because it was right, but because you were forced to. Yet, the student body had discovered a way around it, a small snag in the system, a loophole. The answer was so obvious it was almost missed: you just chose not to care, simple as that.

She saw her professor make his way to the podium, a pile of discombobulated papers protruding from his briefcase. Mr. Mitchell was always such a mess. His frazzled hair matched his frantic demeanor. He always seemed to be in a rush and Ashley found this quite draining to watch.

She steered her eyes away from Mitchell, his manic behavior already beginning to affect her mood. She glanced up at the black ceiling, her eyes squinting a bit, attempting to count a few of the thousands of tiny lights that marked the ceiling. She had come to Griffith Observatory when she was fourteen with her mom. Even then, it was such a calming place. She sighed deeply, annoyed that she would be sharing the afternoon under the stars with a bunch of assholes. Most of them, anyways.

    3. I really like your story but I think you should do something about all the jumping around in time in it because sometimes it’s confusing. Maybe you could write in fake dates for each of your posts or something.

    5. To answer questions: No, I didn’t write a story about Shane. Also, I thought about writing in dates for this, and it is still something I may do after I am done. I understand it does get confusing in terms of time placement, however I did want this fic to be somewhat ambiguous; almost as if each post is just a moment in time, and we aren’t always sure exactly when it occurs, but we we learn about the characters within each vignette, and trust me, by the time the finale hits, you will understand everything. However, I haven’t ruled out the dates idea, fionapplefanatic15, so I may go back and do that…don’t be surprised if I implement this concept soon…and thanks for the comments and tips. It means a lot! *wink*
