Spencer and Ashley were watching television in Spencer’s living room. Spencer was lying down on Ashley’s lap and Ashley was stroking Spencer’s hair.  “Do you need your medicine, babe?” Ashley joked as she revealed a bag of skittles.

“Yes, please,” responded Spencer with a chuckle.  Ashley took out some skittles and put them in Spencer’s hands.  Spencer ate some skittles and put one in Ashley’s mouth.  Ashley smiled and swallowed the skittle.  She leaned in to kiss Spencer sweetly on the lips.  Spencer smiled and returned the kiss.  Ashley stopped the kiss. Paula had witnessed this scene since she was able to leave her job early.  She entered the living room.

“I’m home,” Paula said simply.

“Hi, Mom,” said Spencer nervously not knowing how much Paula had witnessed between her and Ashley.  How was your day?

“It was alright,” Paula replied.  Hello, Ashley.

“Hi, Mrs. C,” said Ashley casually. 

“Spence, could I talk to you for a second?” Paula questioned with a sigh. It’s important.

“Sure,” responded Spencer.  Spencer got up and Ashley mouthed to Spencer good luck.  She made a small smile and mouthed back thanks.  She and Paula left the living room.

“What is going on with you and that girl?” Paula questioned sounding suspicious.  Back in Ohio, you never lied down on any of your female friend’s laps while they were over for a visit, let alone I never witnessed one of them kiss you in fact I only have seen you get close with her in California not anyone else for that matter.  Is there something you’re not telling me?  If there is, I would like to know right now.  I’m your mother.  I have a right to know these things.

“There is,” began Spencer.  Here goes nothing.  Spencer took a deep breath and continued, “Mom, Ashley and I are in love.  I know you may not approve of us being together, but nothing is ever going to change how I feel for her in here.”  Spencer pointed to her heart.

“You’re in love?” Paula asked surprised.  I thought that you two might be experimenting since the last person she was dating was a boy.

“Yes very much,” answered Spencer.  It’s not an experiment for either one of us.  We are the real deal.  Ashley and Aiden broke up.  She never loved him to begin with and she really means a lot to me.  I know you may not understand how two girls could fall in love, but the thing is you can’t help who you fall for.
