Shape of My Heart
DPOV
"Carlslie's the best doctor in town, honey," Renee said as she had put me and my sister on the plane that would take me to Forks, Washington, to the hospital that would find me a heart transplant. My dad lived there too.
Bella and I were fraternal twins, born to Charlie and Renee Swan. When we were a few months old, Mom left and took us with her to Phoenix. Every summer for two weeks we would go to Forks to spend time with Dad, but two years ago we put our feet down and vacationed with him in California instead. When Mom remarried and her new husband got signed with the Florida Marlins, she stayed home with us instead of travelling with him, but we knew it made her unhappy, so this past January we decided to go stay with Dad in Forks. Since I was too weak to go to school because of my weakening heart condition, Charlie had Sue Clearwater from the Quilute Reservation come homeschool me. I had to have oxygen around the clock and spent more time in and out of the hospital.
Charlie was good friends with Sue's husband, Harry Clearwater, and another Quiluete named Billy Black. Bella and I had spent our summers with Jacob Black, Billy's son, making mud pies together while the adults did their own thing.
When Bella first arrived at Forks High School, she met the Cullens. I'd already met Dr Cullen at the hospital, but it wasn't until Bella started hanging around with Edward Cullen that she learned his secret and shared it with me: the Cullens were vampires, and Jacob, Billy, and Harry knew it too. They were vegetarian vampires and only lived on animal blood, which is how they could be around humans. Carlslie was over 300 years old and aside from changing his family members into vampires, he had never feasted on human blood. Their family, or coven, consisted of Carlslie (Dr Cullen), his wife Esme, and their 5 "children": Emmett and Rosalie, Jasper and Alice, and Edward.
Edward had been changed at the age of 17, but technically he was 108 years old. When Bella fell in love with him, I had been disgusted at first. Humans didn't need to be running around with vampires, much less dating them. There was no doubt that Edward cared deeply for Bella, which made me realize that I wanted to find love too. Thanks to my debilitating heart murmur I hadn't been able to get out of bed much less go on a date. I had been born with it, and it had gradually gotten worse. Now I was on the top of the list for a transplant.
