Settling Into ‘Me’ – (Chapter: 1–Getting Ready)

“OK, so we’re still on for Grey tonight, right?” I asked with a smile as I got out of the car.

“Absolutely! Pick you up at eight,” Ashley said as she winked at me and slowly drove off.

I was still smiling as I walked through my front door and headed up to my room. I knew my dad was in the kitchen cooking, but I needed to get some homework done before Ashley came back. I didn’t want that to be left hanging over my head when I went out.

“Spencer? Is that you? Come in here,” Arthur called from the kitchen.

*Sigh* I turned around and dropped my books onto the couch as I walked into the kitchen and leaned back against the counter.

    “What’s up, Dad?”

“Just wanted to find out how your day went. I feel like I never talk to you anymore. I’m cooking pot roast for dinner!”

“Oh, my day was fine. I did well on my Algebra II test, but I have some homework I have to do. I’m going to Grey tonight with Ashley at 8, so unless dinner is ready early, I won’t be eating.”

    “How’s six sound?”

I gave him a smile and a nod and headed back upstairs with my books. I walked into my room and stared at my desk. I really hated doing homework, but I knew I had to get crackin’. I looked at the clock: 3:42. That means I had until five to finish my homework so I could shower before dinner, then spend the rest of the time after I ate getting ready until Ashley got here.

    Perfect.

Plopping down in my desk chair I pulled out my history book and started writing down the “Terms to Know” in my notebook. I hated busy work. I decided that history was overrated and decided to check my email first. I had three emails: one spam, one that my grandma sent me asking me what she should get for Glen for his birthday, and one from Aiden.

    Why is Aiden emailing me?

I opened it up and almost screamed for joy when I realized what it was. Aiden and Glen had received in school suspension the past three days for fighting in the halls. Apparently it had given Aiden lots of time to catch up on his school work, because he had sent me a copy of all of that night’s homework assignments—completed. For the obvious reasons, I opened the documents and changed the wording of some of the answers slightly and even purposely got one wrong. I didn’t want to get caught turning in an identical assignment.
