SECRETS – (Chapter: 13)
I walk into my apartment, and head straight to my bedroom. I had a long day, but it was good. We got alot of work done. I’ve been producing for four years and I still love it. I’m starting to change into my pajamas when the phone rings. I check my caller ID before I answer. "What’s up Ky?" Kyla is my half sister. I met her the summer after graduation. Apparently she got tired of never knowing her sister. She was shocked when she found out that I had no idea who she was.
She begins to talk insanely fast. "Woah, Ky, slow it down."
I hear her take a deep breath over the phone. "Okay. Guess who I saw today?"
I shrug. "Who?"
"Spencer."
I can’t talk. I literally can’t speak. My heart just dropped into my stomach. I clear my throat, attempting to find my voice. "Where?"
"She was at starbucks. She’s in town visiting her parents." The phone goes quiet. "Are you okay?"
I laugh, but it comes out nervous. "Yeah. I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be?"
"Ash."
I sigh a little. "Yeah Ky, I know. I have to go." I hang up on her, letting the moment sink in.
Just in case you’re wondering, Spencer didn’t pick UCLA.
"I’m sorry Ash. I just have to do this." She looks at me, crying.
I nod, feeling tears stream down my face. "So, what now? It’s over? Just like that?""
She shakes her head, moving closer to me. "No. That’s not what I want." She looks at me biting her lip. "Can’t we try long distance?"
I step back, leaning against the wall. "You know that wouldn’t work."
She moves closer, wrapping her arms around me. "But I’m not ready for this to be over. I love you Ash. I want this to work. Isn’t it at least worth trying?"
I rest my forehead against hers, sighing. "I love you too. I just don’t want to get hurt."
"We’ll be okay. If it’s meant to be, things will work out." She leans in, placing a gentle kiss on my lips.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wrap my arms around her, holding her as tight as I possibly can. "This goodbye is impossible." She laughs through her tears, trying to smile.
"Well then don’t say goodbye. We’ll be seeing each other soon anyways." I sniff a little.
"Six weeks isn’t soon. It’s basically forever."
She sighs, pulling away to look at me. "I know. But we’ve talked about this. We’ll talk everyday and see each other when we can."
I wrap her in another bear hug. "I love you."
"I love you too." We hear the final boarding call for her plane. She looks at me, giving me a slow, sweet kiss goodbye, before walking off.
Just like that she’s gone.
I haven’t spoken to Spencer in seven years. God. I was nineteen the last time I talked to her. My phone rings again, bringing me back out of dreamland.
