Opposites – (Chapter: 22)
It was late when Ashley lay sleepless beside Spencer. Curled close, her hand caught loosely in hers, she slept deeply, drugged with loving and fatigue. Her scent hung in the air so that even in the dark Ashley could visualize her. A small alarm clock ticked monotonously at her left, its luminous dial glowing. Twelve twenty-seven.
Her mind was far too active for sleep. She sensed, as she knew Spencer did, that the idyll was nearly over. They were back where they had once ended, and questions would not be put off too much longer. Impatience gnawed at her. Unlike Spencer, Ashley looked for the end of the season. Only then would the time be right for answers and explanations. She was not used to biding her time, and the strain was beginning to tell. Even tonight under the laughter she had understood her wordless request that she not probe.
The question of her mother, Ashley mused, shifting the pillow to brace her back. Spencer was more unhappy about the estrangement than she admitted. It showed in her eyes. It was incomprehensible to her that members of a family could turn away from one another. Her thoughts drifted to her mother, to Kyla. There was nothing either of them could do she wouldn’t forgive. She’d never be able to bear the thought of being responsible for their unhappiness. Could a mother feel any different about a daughter? An only daughter, a much-loved daughter, Ashley reflected.
She could remember Paula Carlin’s pride in Spencer. Ashley had often sat beside her during one of Spencer’s matches in her early days as a pro, then consistently during her last year. Even in such a private woman the adoration had showed. It wasn’t possible to believe it had been only for the athlete and not for the woman.
Surprisingly Paula had accepted Ashley’s relationship with her daughter. No, Ashley corrected, approved. She’d seemed to enjoy seeing them together. Once, Ashley recalled, Paula had gone as far as outlining her expectations to Ashley of their future. At the time Ashley had been both amused and annoyed at the motherly interference. What plans she had had for a future with Spencer had still been vague. Then, when they had crystallized in her mind, it had been too late. Frowning, Ashley glanced down at Spencer.

I’m surprised no one has left a comment for this story. I started reading this story a while ago, on fanfiction.net, and then you stopped posting it. I just got caught up on here and felt I should comment. Man, that was an intense chapter, damn Paula, telling other people’s business. I don’t remember, but didn’t Spencer have a miscarriage or something? Ashley has the right to be mad though, Spencer cheated on her with her ex. Man, I can’t wait for the next batch of updates. Please update soon.
