    Ashley finally talks to Lindsay and she makes a suggestion to Spencer.

     

     

    Ashley glanced at Spencer, giving her a look that let the blonde know exactly who it was. Spencer started to reach for the phone, but Ashley was hesitant, covering the mouthpiece with her hand, “Don’t you think that maybe…” she said, asking the question without the words.

    Spencer nodded. She gave in.

    “Lindsay,” Ashley said, resuming the phone call that had needed to happen ever since high school, “what are you doing?”

    “I need to talk to Spencer.”

    “You talked to Spencer earlier, remember? It didn’t work out in your favor. Just try again next year like you always do.”

    Lindsay couldn’t help but laugh, “Fine, fair enough. Listen, I know that you probably don’t like me very much right now.”

    “No, that’s where you’re wrong. I’ve never liked you. This moment isn’t exceptional.”

    Lindsay breathed her frustration into the phone before responding, “More than anyone else, you have to understand how I feel. I mean, you love her too.”

    “Don’t ever flatter yourself enough to think the way you feel is even minutely comparable to the way I feel about her because it’s not…not even close.”

                Spencer slid quietly out of the bed, walking slowly into the adjoining bathroom and drawing a hot bath. This was her hundredth breaking point of the last month. She was ashamed of her feelings and thoughts as she listened to Ashley’s end of an intense phone conversation. She was ashamed of the guilt she felt towards both women. She knew she wasn’t worthy of their adoration, especially considering the hell she had put them both through over the years. And then there was what she did to Rachel.

    “Fuck,” she said aloud and she slid herself down and into the painfully hot water. How many more people were going to get burned before Spencer finally knew exactly what she wanted?

    Suddenly Ashley’s voice raised an octave or nine and Spencer could hear her clearly again, “Oh, and you know her so fucking well? That’s a joke, Lindsay! Following her around for eight years doesn’t mean you know her. It means Spencer should get a restraining order!”

    Spencer slid further down into the bath water, submerging her ears so she didn’t hear the screaming.

    In the next room, Ashley was standing now, practically red with anger. “Oh really? And how many times did you cheat on her, Lindsay? Oh, that’s right. You cheated on her with my girlfriend, you go after her fiancée three seconds after they break up, you play all these fucking mind games with her. Yeah, you’re right. Spencer totally needs you in her life.”
