“What?” Ashley whispered aloud as she watched an obviously nervous Spencer Carlin walk across the stage.
Once Spencer reached the microphone, she tensed even more, “Um, hi…hi, everyone. My name is Spencer, but I…uh…I guess you know that already. So, I’m not really a musician. I mean, I sing a little bit, but I’ve never even thought about getting up in front of tons of people and doing it, you know? Anyway, I’m up here because I’m in love with…I’m in love with this amazing woman…”
Several guys in the back of the room cheered.
Spencer laughed, relaxing a little, “Like I was saying, she’s amazing. She’s supportive, she’s super talented, she’s funny and smart and sexy and she’s everything that I’ve ever wanted. But I screwed up and I let her get away. And I guess I’m supposed to just live with that mistake…but I can’t. I just…I can’t.”
Ashley stared at her—hard.
“Ash,” the blonde said, finally turning to look at Ashley, “I’m ready. I’m ready to be with you. I know this is right…you and me…and if I don’t at least tell you how I feel, I’m going to regret it. I completely understand if you don’t want to be with me. I know I’ve put you through hell, but you’re a person worth fighting for, so I at least have to give it a shot, you know? For once.”
Ashley nodded. Now it was her turn to cry.
“You and I are victims of bad timing. We always have been. But we’ve also been victims of my fear. For some reason, I chose it over you, but I can promise that if you give me another chance—my last chance—I’ll never choose anything over you again.”
“What about a month from now? How do I know you won’t be scared then?” Ashley said, looking up at Spencer from the audience.
“I’ve been without you for almost five months now, ok? And the only thing that scares me more than being alone is not being with you. If I lose you…” Spencer trailed off.
“I don’t mean to disturb you, but is anyone going to do any singing…play any instruments…anything?” the host asked from the side of the stage.
“Yeah, sorry,” Spencer replied, “um, ok…”
