    She’d left the past behind her or so she thought. Now it was staring her in the face and all she could do was keep running.

    “Food’s here,” Ashley heard Madison call out through the closed door.

    She was tempted just to ignore it and stay hidden in the bathroom, but her stomach rumbling caused her to rethink it.

    She was completely torn. She didn’t want to go out and see the both of them, but she was hungry. She had already made a fool of herself hiding in the bathroom.

    She opened the door and a thought struck her.

    Stepping out into the living room she felt her gaze drawn to both Madison and Spencer.

    Her gaze fell on Spencer first.

    She sat in one of the large cream-colored armchairs her head was bent and she was reading a book.

    It didn’t look like she and Madison were even aware the other was in the room. The thought that they were ignoring each other made Ashley wary.

    Her eyes slid to Madison who was situated on one of the couches and had paperwork spread out on the coffee table, a laptop rested on her lap.

    Neither noticed her.

    Maybe she could slip in and get her food unnoticed and head back into the bathroom. She knew she was a coward but didn’t really care. Anything to avoid the awkwardness and anger that would spring up between them all.

    “Don’t just hover there. I’m not going to let you eat in the bathroom, Ashley. Take a seat,” Madison spoke without looking up from her laptop.

    Ashley didn’t say anything. She didn’t trust herself to say anything polite because she wasn’t in a good mood.

    She stepped further into the room.

    “Where’s my guitar?” she demanded glancing around.

    “It’s right over there.”

    The fact that it was Spencer speaking made her feel nauseous and light headed. She quickly looked away from her and to the area she’d pointed at. Her guitar case was leaning against the wall to her left.

    She hoped that Madison hadn’t gone through it. She didn’t like her things to be touched. Besides she had her personal effects in the case. Anything that meant something to her was in that case. If Madison saw any of it she didn’t know how she would react.

    She wanted to pick up her case and carry it around with her, much like a security blanket.
