    My Best Friend's Girlfriend

Kyla pulled up in her Volvo in the King High parking lot.  It was Ashley’s first day back at King High on a cool and sunny Monday morning. “Uh thanks for the ride, Kylie,” Ashley said.

“For the millionth time, it’s Kyla,” replied an annoyed Kyla.  “Get the name right. It’s only two syllables.”

“Sorry, but my memory is still on the fuzzy side,” Ashley sighed.  “It’s nothing personal, sis.”

“How could you not remember your own sister though?” asked Kyla curiously.  Ashley shrugged in confusion and Kyla sighed in exasperation.  “How are you going to get home today?  I have a three hour class in the afternoon so I won’t be able to pick you up.”

“I’ll manage,” Ashley stated as she refrained from rolling her eyes.  “I’ll get a ride from uh one of my classmates or something.”

Ashley left the Volvo and noticed Spencer.  She smiled at the blonde.  Spencer returned the smile.  Ashley ran towards her.  “Welcome back, Ashley,” said Spencer.

“Thanks, it’s good to be back,” Ashley replied. Ashley closed her eyes trying to place Spencer’s face with a name.  “Your name is…Spencer, right?  Sorry if I’m wrong.”

“Yeah, it is,” stated Spencer.  Ashley let out a sigh of relief and Spencer chuckled at Ashley’s behavior.  “Even if you didn’t remember my name, it would be fine.  I know you’ve been through a lot lately.”

“You’re a lot more understanding than my sister,” Ashley noted.  “The doctors say that it’s going to take awhile for me to remember things again.  The bump to the head was pretty bad.”

“You have amnesia,” pointed out Spencer with a sigh.  “I’ll help you out with any gaps that you have with your memory.”

    “Really?” Ashley asked surprised.

“Of course,” answered Spencer.  “We have most of our classes together so just follow my lead, okay?”  Spencer held out her arm for Ashley to take and Ashley looped her arm through Spencer’s.

At lunchtime in the quad, where there were surrounding tables and trees, Spencer was eating her sandwich at her usual table, and Ashley walked towards her.  “Are you okay?” Spencer questioned with concern.

“Y-yeah,” lied Ashley.  “Why would you ask me that?”

“Your cheeks are puffy, your eyes are red, like when you cry and also are refusing to maintain eye contact with me,” Spencer noted.  Ashley let out a chuckle, but it sounded like she was going not to break down into more tears. “What’s going on?”
