Missing Person – (Chapter: Chapter One)

    Missing Person

    Part One

“These are always so sad…” Spoke a blonde haired girl from behind a newspaper, her lips pressed into a thin, unhappy line.

“What are?” Inquired her mother, walking from the kitchen into the living room. She peered over the girl’s shoulder at the add her daughter was reading. It said “PLEASE HELP US FIND ASHLEY DAVIES” in large bold print, and underneath was a picture of a teenage girl.

“Apparently she’s been missing for like three months now. They are offering a reward and everything…” The girl spoke, sounding sincerely concerned. Her mother silently admired the girl’s empathy for a complete stranger.

“Poor family. And she is so pretty too.” The woman remarked before breathing a sigh, “I wouldn’t let it get to you Spencer, I’m sure they will find her.”

Spencer’s brother entered the room at that point, stretching his arms above his head and thumping down on the couch next to her. “If it’s been three months the only thing they are going to find is a body.”

“Don’t say that Glen.” Paula chided from the other room as Spencer glared at him with disdain.

“Hey, facts are facts. Not to mention she was totally hot.” He continued on, more to irritate his sister than anything else.

“You are such a jerk.” The young blonde spoke angrily as she stood up from the couch. Tossing the paper in his face she turned and walked stiffly towards the door, “I’m going to get some air.”

Paula shot her son a reprimanding glare before nodding in Spencer’s direction, “Alright sweetheart. Dinner is going to be ready in a couple hours so don’t be long.”

With a small bob of her chin Spencer nodded then was out the door. She walked down the street with her head down, watching her shadow stretched out in front of her. It was about a 15 minute walk to the small grocery store close to her Los Angeles home. As she made her way towards it her head was filled with thoughts of the missing girl. Who was she? What happened to her? The smiling brunette from the photo wasn’t much older than herself. That could easily be her on the pages of a newspaper.

“Hey, I’ve been taking care of you for a fucking month now, and what have I gotten out of it?” The sound of a gruff man’s voice awakened Spencer from her thoughts.
