"Hello?" Kyla whispers into the phone. She must have still been asleep when I called. I could
here her trying to clear her throat so she could talk louder. "Hello?" she says again, with an edge of annoyance in her voice.

"Did I wake you?" I ask holding my line of questioning at bay for the moment.

"Spencer?"

"Yeah, did I wake you?" I ask again.

"You did but why are you calling so early? Is something wrong?"

"Um . . . did you know Ashley was back?"

"Spence, look. She asked me not to tell you. Her home is here. It’s where she grew up. You can’t expect her to stay away forever. She gave you two years." she said. I tried to calm myself, really I did. It’s just that I had seen Ashley this morning, and Kyla knew she was coming back. And she hadn’t told me. I had called her every three days for the past two years, asking about Ashley. I felt betrayed.

"Two years?" I scream. "That’s about the only fucking thing she ever gave me other than a broken heart. See, I thought that with you being her sister and one of my best friends that you would have at least told me she was coming back!"

"You’re right, I am her sister, and that’s why I didn’t tell you because she asked me not to. And I’m your best friend so I didn’t want to upset you."

"You thought it would be better for me to randomly run into her?" I say as I pace back and forth in my living room.

"Quit being a bitch Spencer . . . Wait, you ran into her? Her plane landed at like, 3:45 this morning and you’ve already ran into her?" she asked a little skeptically. I looked at the clock on the wall. It was still early, only 6:30.

"No, I . . . had a nightmare." I sighed and flopped down on the couch. I let the bitch remark slide because deep down I knew I was being the biggest bitch in the world.

"You know, she has the same nightmare? She’s told me the exact same thing as the dream you’ve described but through her eyes." she states.
