Chimera – (Chapter: It’s Just Business)

The rain was pouring down and lightening flashed in the sky like nothing the city had seen in a few years. Gutters were beginning to overflow while the citizens ran to and from their respective destinations, getting soaked to the bone as soon as they stepped out of the door.

In downtown Los Angeles, in front of an old seemingly abandoned building, police officers and FBI agents milled about, securing the area and going over details of the scene. No one looked even remotely happy due to the abominable weather and the fact that they had a plethora of people in custody which certainly didn’t make life much easier for any of them.

However, no one’s foul mood came close to matching one FBI agent’s aggravation and dismay. Umbrella in hand, she walked to the front of the building in her rather expensive power suit, curtly greeting those she knew along the way and ignoring everyone else.

When she reached the open door and stepped inside, she took a deep breath, inhaling the lingering scent of drugs that still hung in the air like an afterthought. “Smells like teen spirit.” She muttered as she shook the water off of the umbrella and closed it.

“Agent Duarte.”  The voice was gruff and low. A man in his early 40s walked towards her in a suit and tie with latex gloves on his hands. “Glad to see you showed up.”

“I wouldn’t have missed this train wreck for the world Agent Polowski.” She didn’t mind the man with his wide girth and ridiculous mustache but she knew what he was waiting to show her and that in and of itself was enough to crush any good natured banter between the two. “What do we got?”

“A body.” He said simply as they made their way past agents taking down notes and pictures to a stair case that stopped at the second floor. “A rich dead body. One of those low key multi-millionaire guys who played the stock market right and made off with a killing.”

She couldn’t help but role her eyes at the phrase as they turned a corner and walked down the hallway. Agents walked in and out of rooms while the CSI’s gathered forensic evidence. “When’s the DEA getting here?” The fact that this place was a veritable crackhouse for the rich and famous would mean that the DEA would come swarming in like a plague of locusts ready to mess around with her investigation.
