    A Bird, A Daisy, And A Papi

Walking down the street is something that sometimes is simply done for the sake of being done for Shane. The street in question is Santa Monica Boulevard and Shane has just finished an overnight slumber in an office room at SheBar. Passing by her are a couple of familiar faces. They are arm-in-arm and happy together as they wave at the slightly groggy Shane.

    Carmen ”Hey, Shane.”

    Paige ”Good morning, Shane.”

    Shane ”…’Sup guys.”

As Carmen and Paige pass by her, Shane takes a look back for a moment, turns back around, shakes her head, and continues onward.

    Meanwhile at the Planet…

Alice sits at a table as she continues to find herself intrigued by the waitress in the denim shorts and suntan hose. She is not alone at the table as others are amused by the intrigue.

Alice ”Yeah, my gaydar’s all over the place on this one. She gives that same smile to everyone.”

Dana ”You’re not sure she’s straight?”

Alice ”I’m not sure she’s sexual, Dane.”

Papi ”All that matters is I can make her Papi-sexual.”

    Lara ”And here we go.”

Dana ”Does she even know you?”

    Papi ”She will, Tennis Spice.”

Papi winks to Dana as Alice rolls her eyes, seated next to her silent girlfriend. Shane enters the Planet and the waitress immediately welcomes her with a warm smile while walking by.

    Daisy ”Howdy, Shane!”

Shane does a cool, reverse nod in acknowledgement. Alice’s previously silent girlfriend smirks toward Papi.

    Tasha ”She knows Shane.”

Papi ”The fuck ever, man. Check it, this is how the pros do it.”

Papi excuses herself from her seat and makes her way to Daisy, the waitress. Daisy has made her way to another table where legal business is being discussed by a lawyer and a would-be defendant, wielding an umbrella.

Christine ”Mister Cobblepot, these are some serious charges and I admit… this could be a tall order.”

Oswald ”I know, dear… but that’s why I’m paying you the money I am, waugh-waugh.”

Christine ”I think our only shot may be to show your human side.”

Oswald ”Ah yes, my humanity. Something more than those costumed freaks are!”

Christine ”Maybe not use your alias as much?”

Christine winces as she asks. His name is Oswald Cobblepot, but that’s not how the world knows him.

Penguin ”Miss Sullivan, I’ll always be the Penguin, waugh-waugh!”

Daisy ”Hey yall, whatcha havin’ this mornin’?”

As Daisy gets the order a villain and his nervous attorney, Papi observes. It is almost time to make her move. Daisy gets the order and as she turns to make her way to the kitchen, she finds herself face to face with a woman of opportunity and possible lust.

Papi ”So… Daisy is it, huh?”

    Daisy smiles.

Daisy ”Daisy Duke of the great state of Georgia. Good mornin’!”

Papi ”Ah, Georgia eh? Yeah girl, that makes sense, ’cause you some kinda fine peach.”

Daisy ”Oh, bless your heart. I’ll get yer order soon, hon I promise.”

Her smile stays intact as she walks past Papi. Papi looks over at the table she was at moments earlier with a confused expression.

    Shane ”What was that about?”

    Lara ”About five seconds.”

    Alice ”And a fail.”

Dana ”It was professionally done though.”

    Papi ”Fuck, man.”

Papi looks over at the table, seeing the gentleman in the purple top hat looking at her and holding up his umbrella.

Penguin ”If you really wanna get her attention, you gotta use the right-”

    Christine ”Mister Cobblepot…”

Penguin ”Waugh-waugh, a little knockout gas and-”

    Christine ”Penguin!”

Penguin mutters a ”waugh-waugh” to himself. Papi shakes her head.

Papi ”I’m goin’ back to Eastside.”

Legends Never Die, They Talk On The Phone

It is morning in West Hollywood. She wakes up from a nice slumber and looks over at the other side of the bed, seeing it is empty and remembers that her girlfriend was needed for morning and midday today. She opens her eyes and grins. It’s good to be alive, she thinks and the thought reminds her to make her daily good morning call to someone else.

The cellphone rings elsewhere in WeHo. The ringing wakes a weary woman from her sleep as her hand stumbles to answer the phone. Before she can say ”Hello” the voice on the other end is ready to verbally pounce as always.

Dana ”Hey! Just letting you know I’m still alive. How are you?”

Jenny ”…You’re seriously gonna keep doing this?”

Dana ”I don’t know. You gonna keep killing us off in your stories?”

    Jenny ”I killed myself off.”

Dana ”And we all know how that worked out!”

Jenny ”Oh God, no yelling. Please. I know, I know I was gonna have Alice go to jail and-”

    Dana ”Blahblahblahblahblah.”

    Jenny laughs.

Jenny ”And that’s why I tolerate these calls. I stopped writing that story, by the way.”

Dana ”That’s good. But you know I gotta pick on you about it.”

Jenny ”So are we still meeting up at the Planet later?”

Dana ”Sure. Lara said Kit brought in this new waitress from the East. She said I’d have to see her to believe her. I asked Al about her and she just shook her head and walked off.”

Jenny ”Someone made Alice speechless? I must witness this person and all her glory.”

Dana ”I gotta get my morning exercise in. I’ll meet up with you later.”

    Jenny ”Okay. Bye.”

Dana ”Try not to kill anyone while writing.”

    Jenny ”Bye Dana!”

Jenny hangs up her cellphone and laughs.

Jenny ”…I don’t even like swimming pools.”

A few moments pass and after some stretches, Dana Fairbanks is out for her morning jog. Her life, post-retirement from professional tennis is way less stressful. She still pulls in endorsements. She still has the occasional announcing gig for T.S.C. She has Lara, her friend, lover, confidant, and West Hollywood’s top chef who is currently hard at work at the Planet. As Dana jogs, a car passing by slows down. Dana sees the familiar face, the short black hair, and the look of half-asleep on her face. She jogs in motion while pausing to talk with one of her recently made friends.

Barbara ”Too bad I can’t join you!”

Dana ”It’s okay. I’m still feeling the burn. Long night?”

Barbara ”Yeah. Lots of…going over notes and stuff like that.”

    Dana ”Sounds fun!”

Barbara ”Okay, I’m off to the library! You should drop by sometime.”

Dana ”I’ll see if I can!”

Dana and Barbara wave to one another before going their separate ways. Dana muses to herself how crazy Hollywood’s become with some of the until-recently unfamiliar faces showing up. There is another one today to notice and she is at work at the Planet.

    Meanwhile at the Planet…

Shane still is unsure what to make of her. She looks over to Alice who also finds herself unsure what to make of her.

    Shane ”Still can’t say anything?”

    Alice shakes her head.

Shane looks over at the new waitress and back to Alice.

Shane ”Al. Say somethin’, man you’re freaking me out.”

Alice ”…Who the fuck dresses like that?”

Shane looks at the waitress and shrugs.

    Shane ”I guess she does.”

Alice ”Seriously? Denim shorts and pantyhose?”

Shane can only muster a feint ”Hey…” before shrugging it off. Suddenly, the waitress in question looks over at Alice and Shane and offers a warm smile before focusing on the table she is tending to.

    Alice ”Ohmygodshelookedatme!”

    Shane ”Jesus, Al relax.”

Alice ”Yeah, but she didn’t even notice you.”

    Shane nods sarcastically.

Shane ”That’s good to know, thanks.”

Suddenly, the attention of both Alice and Shane is taken away from the waitress whose Southern drawl can be heard from across the Planet itself to a man in a blue ball cap savagely scarfing down a tart. Alice and Shane look at the man and he looks back, offering a tart-mouthful response of ”I paid for it.” Just as suddenly, he departs in a quick run out the front door where a black van with red trim is in motion with the back doors open. The man leaps in, Howling Mad before the doors close and the van speeds off.

Alice ”Yeah, I’m not really hungry now.”
